Babies on the Brain

Flying with Ruby question

So tomorrow will be my first solo flight with Ruby.  I am super nervous about it, but I know we will be fine.  She is still nursing so I don't have to worry about bottles, however I am going to need to carry on solid food for her, since we will be traveling over dinner time.  There are only 40 minutes from when my flight lands to my connecting flight leave.  So zero time to grab something then.

You can carry on food for babies/children right?  Are there any restrictions on what?

  • I used this TSA link when I flew with my LO.

I used this too, I printed it out and kept it with me just in case. No one questioned me though and I had a bottle and 2 little pods of babyfood.

    Sadie is not impressed.

  • When I flew to Virginia Beach last summer I brought a giant ziplock bag of chocolate cookies for my In-Laws without issue in my carryon. I think you can bring whatever food you want, just not any liquid that's not breastmilk, formula etc.
  • We were able to carry sippy cups and juice boxes for A.

This is the line that confuses me:

You are allowed to bring gel or liquid-filled teethers, canned, jarred, or processed baby food in your carry-on baggage and aboard your plane.

Does that mean I can bring homemade food in ziplocks and tupperwear, or does it have to be in sealed jars/containers?

You can bring any food, you shouldn't even have to show it to them, just liquids. Is she eating purees or more solid but soft things? Maybe just stick with steamed chunks that you could mash after you are through security if she needs purees.

To be on the safe side I would take sealed.  It would suck if you only took homemade and had to toss it.

She doesn't really eat purees at all, except oatmeal.  She has only had store bought jarred/pouch food twice and she would barely eat it.  She pretty much eats grown up food, just cut small and sometimes cooked more.  Ugh.  Maybe I will bring some oatmeal as a back up in case her homemade food gets taken.  That way all I have to do is add water.  Then I can buy a banana or something at the deli.

  • We brought ziplocs filled with cheerios and other baby snacks.  We also brought  baby cereal and formula with us.  It says "processed baby food", which to me means other baby foods not in a jar or can.  Also does not say it has to be sealed.  I can't remember if we brought our homeade stuff, but I don't think this would be an issue.

  • Bev, food is perfectly fine. It's only liquids you have to show. Purees I only question because I have no experience. If you're only having to bring enough for one meal anyway, I'd risk bringing what you know she'll eat. TSA's big stink is that you SHOW them liquids, not have them discover them in your bag. There are some assshole agents out there who've made mothers throw stuff out (I know we've all seen the videos) but they are going against their own policies when they do that, and it seems pretty rare over all.

DD flys all the time and trust and believe she does so with homemade snacks from home because I am too cheap to pay what the airport places charge.

    copied from here:

All food must go through the X-ray machine. Do NOT bring food to the security checkpoint unwrapped, as shown in the image on the right.

Food must be wrapped or in a container. Unpeeled natural foods like fruit are okay, but half-eaten fruits must be wrapped.

I brought my homemade baby food in little tupperwares.  They did ask to perform a test on it, but that was all.

Thank you!  That clears it up for me.
