bunk beds - age for top?

how old/big should a child be before sleeping on the top bunk?

our kids' room is pretty small, and we have to buy T a new bed. i'm not sure how much longer we'll be in this house, so i'm considering buying a bunk bed. the one i'm looking at has a desk underneath, which he'll need in a couple years (for homework, EEEEK, my baby will have homework soon!).

i'm not sure if he's ready for a bunk yet. he rarely gets up at night after he goes to bed. the top has a railing, so he can't fall out. but he's also a fairly risk-averse child (i.e., he is NOT the daredevil, climb on everything, jump off furniture youngster that most boys his age are).

i think i'll take him to the store and ask him what he thinks about it, too.

i had the top bunk as a child, but i think i was 7 or 8.

Re: bunk beds - age for top?

  • We have bunk beds for our girls.  We got them when DD#1 was in 1st grade, so around 7.  DD#2 occasionally slept up there when she was 5.  Neither of them are the type to try to jump off or play around on the top bunk.  DD#2 prefers the bottom bunk but I'm fine with her sleeping on the top if she wants.

Technically, you're not supposed to have anyone younger than 6 on the top bunk. It's a law in VA, not that it's ever enforced.

  • I looked into this quite a bit when we were arranging the girls' room to be a shared room.  Like pp said, I did see something about a law (I didn't know it was VA specifically) that says 6.  The AAP book I have that I refer to quite a bit says 6.  When you read the horror stories abou the top bunk, (which I don't recommend doing because it makes you never want to get a bunk bed), the dangers included falling out (obviously) but also getting stuck in the railing and getting choked.  Indifferent
