Candid photos vs Studio...

This week we are doing some new pictures. I'm on the fence with studio portraits vs the nature candids. I prefer the quality of the nature ones but the kids never ever smile!
Edit: I probably should add I live in a really small town with limited options

Thanks! I agree... they insist on it with me and it drives me crazy (so I let them do it and get the negatives and than do my own touch up later when I have the time and than reorder). In Las Vegas the studios never did that.
I'm so frustrated w/my options. I did a test set of pictures outdoors with supposedly the most recommended in our town. I look nice but the kids look like we are torturing them. I could travel an hour to the bigger neighboring city but the kids are really angry each time we do that by the time I'm there. We used to do that with Harmon when we moved here and we tried it this Summer and again it looks like I'm beating my kids
I might just do something easy this time around next week and make sure for our important ones at Christmas time we get the Pimp Daddy photographer. There you answered my question!!! I need to keep looking.
Take them to the park and just start taking pictures. I am sure you have a digital camera that holds tons of pictures. Just keep taking them and don't pose the kids just let them be kids. And you will come out with a few cute ones or possibly a ton.
I love taking pictures of my kids and I believe the best photos come out when you least expect them. No matter what their mood is it's ok because that is who they are.
Also, try turning off the flash. You would be amazed at how much better your kids natural features will turn out. And get up close. Face shots come out awesome when you are close.
And yes I still do the stuido shots but I really prefer the ones I take.
Who did you use in LC? I have a friend that used Brooks Photography and was pretty happy with them. They weren't fantastic, but they did take pretty nice pictures.
We've used Creative Flair Photography here in EP and she's great. Her pictures are gorgeous. She has a facebook page you can follow and see what she does, plus of course she has a blog and website. I'm sure she drives to LC to take pictures, though she might charge a mileage fee. https://www.creativeflairphotography.com/

This is who I want to use next year for our family pictures. Her DH works with mine and I was going to use her last year, but she had some scheduling conflicts. I think her pictures are beautiful. She's a SAHM and is also LDS.

Thank you again for all this feedback! I suck at pictures (I have an SLR and they still look like a 3 yo took them). I'm practicing though... so maybe in time
Cmeon yeah sometimes I get lazy and just want the easy way but I'm never happy with the quality! I appreciate your motivation to get something better done!!!
Snoopy thank you so much for all of your photographer suggestions. I've been emailing all your suggestions this morning. I still might do a cheap studio run this week if I don't hear back in time (my nanny will be gone for a few weeks and DH wants to get it done before she leaves for vacation) but now I've got some great leads for the important ones in December.
