Packing seems soo fun! But when I actually get started and take out a box then head off to an area, I start shifting through the stuff and realize that I might need that stuff before we move so I should wait to pack that. Then I move to another area and I realize that it is going to be the same issue... So I have yet to pack one thing and I am moving in 3 weeks. I don't want to just throw things in boxes. I want my new home to be organized and I want the unpacking process to be easy and self explanatory as far as what goes where.
For those that have moved to a pretty far distance, what was your timing on packing and getting things cleared out? Am I behind? I think it's also feels more overwhelming for me since I am doing all of this with the lo's in the house with me. This weekend, if the carpets have been cleaned in the new house, I am going to be taking over all the Christmas stuff/ holiday stuff, things that are too big to fit in a box that we are not using right now like our beach tent, lawn chairs...
Re: In my mind packing seems fun...Help me?
Like I said in my mind it seems soo fun and relaxing to go through the boxes and pack one item at a time and nicely wrap it. I forgot to mention that I had one of those dreams that I was really in a deep sleep for and I dreamed that I really wanted to pack but DH got mad at me and out of spite, he started to just throw things in boxes and tape them up. I was crying in my room and felt like he didn't care about the fact that I really wanted to be the one to do it.
LOL I woke up all confused!! This is how much it's on my mind!
We moved last October. We started packing in May believe it or not (in between there we had a baby and my husband had some business trips). You wouldn't believe how much "optional" stuff you have around that can be packed and you don't even notice it's gone. I'd start with easy stuff: photos, picture frames, art, knick knacks, stuffed animals, extra toys, winter clothes, etc. Pack it all up (use towels and sheets for fragile stuff) and put those in the garage so they are out of sight. Then start on the more essential stuff. Perhaps leave one designated area in each room with essentials for that room and then pack everything else. Then in the last couple of days you can pack those items. Start room by room, it'll seem less overwhelming.
Good luck and congrats on your new place!
Oh my Goodness!! Now I feel really behind!
These responses are actually getting me motivated to tackle one area at a time. I am going to start in the main bathroom and hall cabinet area today. I have a small stockpile in there so I think I will start there. I think I can make this a game for DD#2 to do with me while DD#3 is sleeping.
Sorry that wasn't my intention! Ha ha.
Anyway, yeah just start doing little things. Like I said, we found that starting with non-essentials was a big help. It clears away a lot of the clutter so you can focus on the things that take longer. Things like books, games, photo albums, sporting goods were easy to pack up too.
I'm so glad you asked this! We're also moving in three weeks at the end of May, and I'm pretty organized (it's what I do for a living), but I'm still kind of freaking out at how soon to start. DH travels a lot for business, so a lot of this is left up to me, and we are doing a TON of work to our new house before we move in...OMG, it's overwhelming! I don't even have boxes yet! ACK! But, my plan is to start with the stuff that we don't need (picture frames, decor, winter stuff, holiday decorations, etc), and just slowly move from there.
Good luck!
