I have a couple of more Q's. My pastor is coming over today with some
church admins to talk about me getting one going one day a week in the
beginning anyway. We were thinking along the lines of 9-1 once a week.
Kids bring lunch. We provide a snack.
1. What kinds of things do you "expect" from your program in relation to education, or do you see it as playtime based learning
2. Do your MDO programs have crafts to send home with the children each time
3. If you do not mind sharing ( I know regionally it can change) but about what does a day /month cost (you can give a range) and how are you paying ie. monthly, each session, for a semester ect.
anything else?
Thanks ladies!!
Re: XP if you use a MDO (mom's day out)
1. Honestly, our MDO program is pretty much a morning daycare. I don't expect a whole lot from it, it isn't preschool. I expect some structure. Ours has a nice routine. They have playtime in the gym followed by snack, then circle time for songs and stories, craft, playground time if it's nice enough or just free play in the classroom, lunch, free time.
2. There is usually a craft to send home.
3. We pay $24 per day per child. It's due monthly. We still have to pay for sick days and vacation days, which sort of sucks, but I get why they do it.
My kids went to the under age 2 MDO every other Friday from 9-1. They ran alternating sessions every other Friday so more kids could participate. It was about $30 a day which I thought was a bit too high.
When DD#1 went she came home with a craft every time and I loved it. By the time DD#2 went they had new teachers in that class and there were no crafts, I was bummed. I would say at least do a craft for holidays.
We brought lunch and they provided a snack. There really wasn't any structure, I noticed the older kids pretty much just played on the playground all day
My son goes every Friday from 9-12 and we love it! Ours is $15/per Friday. They have snack, circle time, craft (which is the best part) and gym time.
It is the best for both of us as when I started him in Feb. I had never left him. We both have learned a lot!
DS goes to MDO.
1. I expect them to keep my kids safe and that they are having fun, my kids do preschool after 2.5 so this is where the learning begins. Although DS does do circle time and some crafts. Nothing irritates me more than MDO programs who do age inappropriate activities (two year olds writing letters and such).
2. Yes he does a craft type of sheet each day, however alot of times it is simply put stickers of vegetables on the letter v and such.
3. I pay $150 a month due by the 1st. For two days a week from 9-2
1. DS goes 2 days a week. There are centers the kids can choose - art/craft table, kitchen, play corner, book nook, sensory tub and an activity table where they do letter tracing, fine motor skill work etc. DH and I would like DS to have the education aspect be a little more rigorous so we are considering parochial school work Pre-k in the fall. They cover the basics (letters, numbers, etc.) at MDO but in a more casual way - if your kid gets it he gets it, if not at least they went over it.
2. DS brings home at least one craft a week. I like seeing what he's doing and he loves showing them off at home.
3. The MDO program that DS attends has a 1,2, or 3 day a week option (M,W,F). The program runs from 9-12 and twice a month you can sign up for Lunch Bunch that runs from 12-1:30. Lunch Bunch is $10 and you pack a lunch - it's just a little bit of free time for them to spend playing with their friends. Payment is due once a month and I pay $112/month for 2 days (about $14 a class).
1. I don't expect a lot of education programs at this point. I expect DS to play with other kids his age and that's about it. Like others, I expect that they keep him safe and entertained.
2. Ours does a craft every week (finger painting, stamps, coloring, etc) but I really don't think DS would notice if they didn't. I honestly don't know how they get toddlers to sit long enough for a craft.
3. We pay $90/month for one day a week from 9-1.
DS eats lunch there (which I pack) and has a snack in the morning (provided by the program). The MDO program is for kids 6-23 months. After they hit 2 they go into the 2's class. His class is a nice mix of toddlers from all ages (some crawling, some beginning to walk, and others close to 2). They intentionally structure each class this way.
1. Like Hizzo said, it's pretty much a morning daycare. It's 9-12, so only three hours, once a week. DD's class is for kids ages 12 months to 23 months (she's a little older now, but the "school year" is almost over and she'll be moving into the preschool class for 2.5 year old kids in the fall. They do lots of singing, dancing, coloring, and playing with toys.
2. They don't send any crafts home, but the preschool that she will enroll in in the fall, which is in the classroom next door to her MDO, does lots of crafts. Currently they do a lot of coloring, and I often see their artwork posted in the hallway.
3. We pay about $130/month.
1. What kinds of things do you "expect" from your program in relation to education, or do you see it as playtime based learning. My son started in the fall at 17 months. His class has 2 teaches/6 kids ranging in ages from 12-18 months (as of Sept. 1st). This class is definitely play based and does not focus much on education. My son's class schedule is playtime, snack, outdoor play, music class, lunch (packed), and then craft and/or playtime. The older classes obviously do focus on education/school readiness.
2. Do your MDO programs have crafts to send home with the children each time. We get something to take home every other week or so. Some weeks they just color, play with play doh or make crafts to hang up at the school.
3. If you do not mind sharing ( I know regionally it can change) but about what does a day /month cost (you can give a range) and how are you paying ie. monthly, each session, for a semester ect.
We pay $100 monthly for one day from 9-12. There is also a supply fee for the year. I'm not positive what it was, but I think it was around $150.
Pretty much the same here...go figure, we are in Houston, TX.
1.Safe, fun, happy. DS started at 16 months and loves it. I do pack a lunch and they have nap time also. Since DS is young, I don't expect a ton....10 kiddos under two; I know I couldn't manage too much!
2. Craft once a week, usually a colored sheet representing the color and letter they focused on that week. During the holidays it is more (easter basket, hand-print "turkey" shirt, Christmas book exchange).
3. $155/month. Tues and Thurs from 9-2. Down here that is a steal. Most programs are much, much more and have more of a wait list/pre-testing to apply system.
Good luck!
