I had a letter delivered a day late today, with the note "snakes on steps" as the delay reason. I know we have garter snakes sunning themselves on the porch this time of year, but they're never more than 8 inches long, and there are NO poisonous species in this area. This, along with some of the reactions to rats as pets in an earlier thread got me thinking.
How are you going to deal with your LO and things that are generally undesirable? If he or she wants to know about snakes or lizards, how will you approach it? Rodents?
What about bugs? If you're the kind of person who freaks out when you see a spider, are you going to put on a brave face for LO, and squish it yourself, or are you just going to avoid the room until DH gets home?
I own a snake for a pet, and I've had several people come over and bring their kids because the child's curious, or wants one for a pet, but the parent has a fear they want to get over. Is this something you'd consider doing, or are you content with your child inheriting your fears?
Re: Teaching LO about creepy crawlies
Honestly...Yo Gabba Gabba. There is a bug episode and DS is not nearly as afraid as he used to be.
I have learned not to freak out like I used to.
And no...we will not have snakes or anything like that as a pet.

I don't really think creepy crawlies will be an issue in our home...I've always been the type to pick up weird animals and bugs (it never mattered to me that it might be dangerous or not, something that my parents were told I would 'grow out of' but I still do it to this day, or would if I could bend much anymore...lol), and DH absolutely loves snakes and spiders too.
Heights on the other hand...I have an intense fear of heights that I have tried many times to get over (riding roller coasters, flying in a plane, things of that nature) and I just can't kick it (I cry like a little girl)...so, if DS and this one on the way wants to go on something that it more than 5 feet off the ground, DH will have to handle it. Lol.
We did the same thing!!! DD loves Yo Gabba Gabba

My mom made all bugs, snakes, lizards, rodents, etc seem interesting so I would never be afraid. When I would try to smoosh a spider, etc. she would tell me a story about its family what it did during the day, stuff like that lol to make me less fearful. She never showed her own fear. I think it back fired a bit, because I would come home with snakes, spiders, etc. She even found dried smooshed roadkill frogs in my pockets....I was a weird kid.
To this day I am not afraid of any bug, snake, spider etc. and want my Lo to be the same. If there is a spider in the house I am the one who gets it DH refuses...

I have all kinds of undesirable quirks I will try to avoid passing on to my kids, one of them is that I will often gag if I try to kill a bug. I'm not afraid of them and actually love rodents and some of the prettier inserts, its just the squishing that I can't handle.
On second thought it might be better for them to just watch DH take care of any bugs, and watch me catch them and let go outside, then to see me gagging because I stepped on a spider trying to be brave.
