Sunscreen: non-toxic AND easy to apply?

I've been lathering DS up with sunscreen every morning to protect his skin before a rough day on the playground but he HATES it.  Last year we used Neutregena Pure and Free but I'm it has some not so good stuff in it so I decided to switch to Badger for kids, but it is so hard to apply.  Same with California Baby which I just can't handle.

DO you have a favorite that is non-toxic and is easy to get on to a wiggly kid?

  • Yes! Burnout is amazing. it was highly recommended by our dermatologist. it is expensive but so worth it. i love the way it goes on and the kids actually like it. it has zinc oxide in it which is the most important ingredient. we buy ours at whole foods but you can find it online at amazon as well.

Ohhh, I'm going to have to give this a try as well.  Andrew flips his *** about sunscreen and I've dreaded having to deal with enough coverage for pre-school.  At home we use a spray on, to which he promptly starts screaming his head off and jumping up and down screaming "get it off me, get it off me", so then I take a towel and "wipe it off".  Thank god at home we have tons and tons of shade so I can pretty much keep him out of the sun but that doesn't help me the rest of the time.

  • Preschool is my issue too J.  He's outside a lot on those days with no shade.  :(  His neck and forearms are brown already.  I just really really don't want him to burn.  He has my skin, which does brown easily but it can also burn.
  • I use CA Baby, but whenever possible, I put it on while he's in his carseat so he can't get away. Works well for preschool, though not always the best way to start off the school day.

This! We have used CA Baby since DS was tiny and I could not stand the pastiness. Just picked up some Burnout for Kids yesterday after some friends' rave reviews and it goes on more smoothly. Also used it for myself and really liked it. I could not find the kids version online, but WF seemed to have a better price for the adult version, so I am going with WF.

non-toxic doesn't really apply to sunscreen.  there's a database that ranks their toxicity from decent to terrible here though.

Burnout falls in the "recommended" range.

The only Neutrogena product that even comes close to their "recommended" range is the Free and Pure Baby Sunblock Stick and that comes with the caveat that the SPF rating isn't accurate (it also has BHT which is neurotoxic)
