Okay, before I start I'll update you that Karly is on Soy and Zantac. I posted yesterday she is vomiting and diarrhea. Today no vomiting but lots of messy diapers (right after a bottle of Soy milk).
I don't like the dr she saw yesterday. I made an appointment with her Dr on Wednesday and I want to discuss this. Instead of switching her formula again, she's really handled the soy well for almost 2 months, I'd like to try adding a bit of cereal. She was fine with it until yesterday and I'm afraid it's not reflux, it's a virus (but that can last for weeks). Right now we are alternating her feeds with 3 ounces of soy and 2 ounces of pedialyte.
Okay, my questions:
1. Is adding cereal to Karlys milk sound like a good idea?
2. Should I maybe try another antacid?
Yankee42...Thanks for answering my questions last night. I REALLY appreciate it ![]()

Re: Reflux moms..wwyd?
Ooh poor sweet baby.
Have they had you see a gastro? (I can't remember who has and hasn't) They can really help to get you at least on the correct formula. I'm not a fan of soy personally.
1. Is adding cereal to Karlys milk sound like a good idea?
This is just my personal opinion so keep that in mind, okay? I don't feel like its a good idea. Introducing cereal (especially rice) early isn't good for little tummy's. They're not able to process it and it can lead to problems down the road. Your child also doesn't need the simple carbs taking the place of nutritious formula and that's what it will do. Adding cereal can also be a choking hazard but I'm more concerned after doing my own due dilligence research about the nutrition aspect. We did well with Similac Sensitive AR which has digested rice starch in it. Basically if you read though, adding rice is simply an asthetic fix. It does nothing to help the reflux. It simply keeps food down in some cases.
2. Should I maybe try another antacid?
You could give it a shot. There are others like Axid, prilosec or previacid that work a little differently from Zantac. They still neutralize and minimize the production of stomach acid. Just in a different way.
I am literally running out the door... but I agree with everything MrsReem said...
That said, I am actually using Enfamil AR (similar to the Similac RS) and I tried cereal in a bottle and it was a disaster... I then did the research like Angie did and I agreed with her completely, and the other part is that it didn't seem to make much of a difference.
I will say that I am reconsidering cereal, but not in bottle, we might start solids at 4 months instead of 6 for Ethan, but for other reasons.
I am taking him to the pedi right now (fever) So I am sorry for the abrupt answer! I lost track of time!
My son has pretty severe reflux. He's been on prevacid since 2 weeks, and still has laryngomalasia (sp?) and irritated esophagus/ vocal chords. We added reglan, and it did nothing to help.
What did help, however, was adding 2 tbs of rice cereal to every bottle, honest to god. He used to spit up 3-5 times after every bottle. Now, he spits up 1-2 times a DAY. I know it's controversial, but in our case, we were running out of new options to try, and his reflux was starting to impact his gross motor development (he is always stiff, arching, and has torticollis). Our physical therapist is very impressed with how much better his reflux symptoms are now. And, he's not in pain nearly as much!
So, I would give it a try. You can go with the Enfamil AR, but really, it's the same thing as adding in rice cereal.
Not to be agrumentative
but it's actually different. The rice starches are predigested so that the baby's tummy doesn't have to digest it. That's a fairly important distinction.
All I know is that my son is no longer miserable, and he is finally healthy, happy, and will bend at the waist, which he would not do previously because he was in so much pain. So, rice cereal gets our vote
The only issue is that his BMs are a little firmer now.
i'm really glad you are going to another doctor..our pedi is awesome and seems to know everything, but we went to another dr in the practice and he seemed clueless..i felt like i knew more than him..
i think prevacid is worth a try..it worked wonders for us..i hear a lot of those on zantac need prevacid added if its not enough..
i know you don't want to switch formula, but just ask the doc if they think she could have developed a soy allergy..
and maybe they will refer you to a GI..we love ours
about the cereal...i hated doing it...like i said for us it didn't stop the huge pukes, and it was just so damn hard to get the nipple size right to get the cereal through, and not go fast..
well....good luck, and keep us posted..i wish i didn't know so much about this crap :P?
