Pregnant after a Loss

Progesterone - Oral Vs. Suppositories

What are your experiences? What are your thoughts? We're picking some up today and they actually asked me what I wanted.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Progesterone - Oral Vs. Suppositories

  • I've heard that the vaginal suppositories are "better", but I knew from previous BFN cycles that my body had trouble absorbing them. I took oral promethium and it seemed to work really well for me. My progesterone was a 45.5 last time they measured it while I was still taking it.

I was on Crinone which I was told was the best for local absorption. It isn't as mess as the other stuff but sorta accumulates in a not so pleasant manner. That being said I was on it from 3 dpo to just this past Saturday at 11 weeks and overall it went fine!! It doesn't change your blood levels much I heard but mine were not vein monitored. I have never had a progesterone issue it's just a mainstay for my RE to start her patients on!! GL I don't think you can go wrong!!

My understanding is that the progesterone supplements are better absorbed and reach their therapeutic level more effectively.  In my personal experience, the oral supplements raised my level adequately so my doc kept me on those.

  • I'm on oral Prometrium right now and it does the trick.  We were given the option this time around with either sticking with the oral or using a cream, and personally a pill is just so much easier for me.

My MD said the vaginal was a little better because it went directly to where we wanted it. Also she said the oral had to go through the liver. She gave me the option, but leaned toward the vaginal. It's a little messy, but not bad. I just wear a long pantiliner. I haven't had any irritation or infections (though I think it might be why sex was uncomfortable).

  • My RE had me take Endometrin (vaginal suppository). The other option was PIO, oral wasn't an option. I did IVF though so I wasn't making any progesterone on my own.

Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  • The suppositories are more effective, and seem to have fewer side effects.

  • Thanks, everyone. As it turns out, they're giving me suppositories whether I want that or not. Sounds like it's a good call though. Thank you for your input.

  • I took prometrium intravaginally. I was glad as I heard the SE were worse when taken orally.
