How Long for Extra Calories?

My daughter is 8 weeks old and 6 lbs exactly.  She was born at 29.5 weeks and was 2lbs 9oz.  She's having trouble digesting Neosure (see my other post, but lots of gas & grunting) so my pedi suggested cutting out the extra calories altogether and moving to just breast milk. This seems very early to me since she's still just 6 pounds.

When did your child cut extra calories (or when do you expect them to)?

Thank you from a worried mama!

Re: How Long for Extra Calories?

  • My DD was born at 4 lbs and 9 oz. She weighed in at 7 lbs and 3 oz at her appt today and her pedi still wants her on Neosure. I'm going to ask her how much longer she needs those exta calories at our next appt. Now I'm thinking we need to switch her to a more gentle formula too, she is having digestive issues as well.
  • My boys were 30 weekers. The bigger baby weighed 3lb 10oz at birth, the smaller weighed 2lb 7oz at birth.

We stopped fortifying the bigger baby's BM with neosure when he was 5 or 6 weeks old. It was just way too rough on his tummy. He's been gaining weight like a champ since then - he's about 19 lb now.

Our smaller baby is still a peanut. We stopped giving him Neosure when he was about 3 or 4 months old, but we still mix his formula to 24 calories. He's about 15.5 lb now. He gets some BM straight from the tap, but my supply is almost completely gone now so the vast, vast majority of his nutrition comes from formula.

  • 28 weekers born 2 lbs 3-5 ounces and we've never been on neosure, but we use enfacare and/or breastmilk mixed to 24 calories, now at 6 months actual age.  We were on 27 calories until 2 months ago.  They are about 14 lbs now.

i wonder how much longer this will go on for us too.  have a pedi appt on Monday and a GI specialist too, so maybe we'll have a change.

  • DD was on Neosure until about 14 months.  Pedi said plan on at least till 1 year.  We had issues switching to cows milk at 12 months and she lost some weight (projectile vomitting) so we put her back on Neosure to get her weight back up.  I always said "Neosure was out secret ingrediant"  DD always did great on it and it kept us in the 10th percentile for weight.  But, you have to do  what is best for your kiddo.
  • We stopped it within a week or 2 of her coming home, so she was probably right about your daughter's size. She was having such a hard time and being just on BM made life easier for her. I tried it for a week to see how her weight gain did and it increased at about the same rate so we just went with it. Granted she hasn't caught up growth-wise but she's following her curve so her doc is very happy.

  • my 29 weeker was 3lbs 2oz at birth and 6lbs 8oz when he came home from the nicu at about 39 weeks.  we were supplementing the 2-3 bottles a day he was getting in addition to breastfeeding with neosure (27 cal).  well, since he was gaining well and we were convinced the formula was keeping him from having bowel movements (he would go ONCE every 5-7 days without getting a glycerin), we just decided to stop it about a week after he came home.  immediately he became more regular (multilpe times a day), he stopped being gassy all the time, and he kept up the weight gain.  i'm soooo glad we stopped it when we did.

  • Our pediatrician said Marit could come off Neosure and go to regular formula/not fortifying BM at her post-NICU discharge appointment, which was around 1 month after she was born. I kept her on it, though, to use it up but it wasn't much more than 2 months after she was born that we switched exclusively to regular formula.
  • i think typically until they are in the 50th percentile. ds is now in the 50th.

ds was just switched off of enfacare and is now on gentlease and he is such a happy baby now. I hated enfacare!
