I went to grad school at U of M, so I am somewhat familiar with the area. However, it has been 5 years, so I don't know how much has changed.
There used to be a COSI museum in Toledo, but it looks like it is called the Imagination Station now.
There is the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Museum outside of Detroit in Dearborn. I know they have an IMAX theater, but I'm not sure if there is anything geared toward small children.
Ann Arbor is a nice town to visit. The downtown area has a lot of shops and restaurants (again, not sure if it would be good for small children). There are a lot of parks in the area too.

Hope that helps!
The Toledo Zoo is very nice and there are some nice metro parks such as Oak Openings.
Their local nest board will be very happy to help you out too with ideas.
