Hmmm...methemoglobinemia is so rare that I am shocked that the warning they put up is because of that. I tell people not to use it because it anesthetizes the throat and upper airway, making it impossible for a child to cough or sometimes swallow their secretions. Drinking from a bottle might also lead to choking because the child cannot properly swallow for an hour or more after using the medication. Not a good thing. My rule is never ever numb the gums, because you just don't know where it goes, once in the mouth. Metheme is just an afterthought since it is very rare to see that.
