Hypermesis - In Home Care

Alright ladies, I'm kinda freakin' myself out here. Last week I was hospitalized for 4 days due to severe dehydration. I've lost a total of 14 pounds in 5 weeks. My doctor says I'll end up putting the weight on, it's just concentrating on getting enough fluids at this point. This pregnancy is complete opposite from my daughter. I may have gotten sick a handful of times with her. This baby sure is a stubborn one (totally think it's a boy!), whenever the docs go to hear his heartbeat, he's moving around so much it's hard to get it.

Anyhow, I left the hospital Saturday and went yesterday (Monday) to do a check up with my OB. I was already moderately dehydrated and doing in home iv and a zofran pump. I've got a PICC line in, but, not sure what I'm getting myself into.

Luckily, I'm a stay at home Mom to a 3 year old and she fully understands Mommy is sick and doctors will be coming to the house. My husband has been great throughout this entire thing and couldn't ask for anything more from him or my Mother.

I'd like to hear any stories that you have to share about Hypermesis, In home Care with IV's and such. I'm awaiting my first in home visit today and starting to panic!

  • Oh I feel for you! I have a zofran pump right now and thankfully no IV yet. My last pregnancy I was much worse and had an IV and zofran pump (via a PICC line). My views on this are: 1. PICC line seems scary but it is SO much better than having peripheral IV's that will just blow since your veins get crappy when you are dehydrated. 2. the weight will come back on eventually, I lost 20lbs in 3 weeks with my DS and when I was induced at 37 weeks I had gained all of it back plus 1 lb!, 3. The baby should be fine, right now the baby takes what little nutrients and reserves you have so you feel like sh*t all the time but the baby is at least getting the good stuff.

I would highly recommend asking about getting your PNV through the IV. I didnt get that and wish that I would have pushed the issue more with my midwives. Especially since you already will have the PICC placed there really isnt any reason to NOT do your vitamins this way. Do you know what company your OB had uses? My midwives use Alere (formerly Matria) and that was who I  had last time as well and they are great.

As for the zofran pump you will REALLY be glad you have the PICC line because it can get kind of uncomfortable  having injection sites in your stomach and thighs. Also dont hesitate to call for demand boluses when you feel sick and if it seems like its not helping ask for a dosage increase. The pump really helps me feel better-- well not great-- just not horrible and able to function/take care of my son appropriately. GL and feel free to message me or email me if you have any other questions! laurenrglenn@gmail.com I know things seem intimidating right now but I think you will be VERY happy with getting home health care because it really does make such a difference!

  • I too am using Alere. I just got everything hooked up. I'm a little overwhelmed but I know that I can do this! It's a lot better than being in a hospital bed. My thing is just staying home. Although, I've been home from getting sick, I still like going for a short walk or on a car ride, etc. Thank you for your story. Just find comforting knowing other people know exactly what I'm going through!

  • So sorry to hear you have hyperemesis, it is no fun. I had it with DD and also had a PICC line until about 26 weeks. I did not have the pump, I had zophran and phenergan syringes deliverd with the iv's & injected through the PICC line. I agree with pp, ask about your vitamins through the iv also. My home nurse brought this up to me around 20 weeks and it was a lifesaver. I liked that it was the same nurse every week checking in on me. Let them know how you are feeling and they will work it out with your Dr. to adjust meds and iv's for you. I lost 25 lbs and ended up gaining that + 5 lbs at 40 weeks. Although I was still vomiting some at the end. It is overwelming to go through it all, but so much better than being in and out of the hospital all of the time. I can't imagine going through it with a 3 year old to take care of. Feel free to email me if you have any questions or would just like to talk. mdiane@zoomtown.com Hope you are feeling better soon!

  • Go out! It is probably going to be tough but I would drive and go out at least 2-3 times a week even with my IV (pole and all Big Smile and pump). The IV pole is a great clothes hanger for if you go out shopping haha

When I drove I would just hang my bag of fluids on the dry-cleaning hook in the backseat and do my thing. The pump is really portable so that wasnt really an issue. Be prepared to get stares but you know what, you do what you have to do and if getting out of the house a few times a week saves your sanity then do it!

What part of town are you in? I would be more than happy to hang out or venture out with you and your pole....I have no shame and wont be embarrassed and we can look sickly together with our pumps :-)

  • I used AmeriMed and I was able to use a backpack to carry everything I needed. I was very portable and tried to get out also. Hopefully that is an option for you! skyllingstadl, I can't imagine bringing your pole around everywhere, I bet that was fun, lol! I hope you are feeling better soon also & you do not need the iv's again.

You are too funny! I was gonna start garage saleing on Friday with my DD, but, I think that'll be overdoing it. Getting in and outta the car a few dozen times, grabbing the pole, bag, fluid and the daughter just sounds exhausting thinking about it!

I live in Amelia, which is like15 minutes from Eastgate Mall. Right now I'm just trying to figure out how in the heck to take a shower/bath with all this. I'm not allowed to unplug my lines from myself until Friday (when dressing gets changed). I guess a good wipe down and having someone help me wash my hair is gonna have to happen so I feel some what human again. I still just can't believe that I'm this sick and have to be on Iv's...boggles my mind.
