Quick POLL: Family names ...

An old friend of mine had her second child last night, and named her Cynthia. HER name is Cynthia. I know it's a family name, but I admit that I raised an eyebrow, especially since their son's name isn't a family name.

So ...

1. Would you ever name your child after yourself?
2. Would you ever name your child after DH?
3. Does your LO have any family names in their name?
4. Are there family names you plan to use later/for other gender?

BONUS: Do you LIKE your name? Why or why not?

NO to all of the above.

BONUS: Do you LIKE your name? Why or why not? My name is just fine, I don't love it but I don't hate it either. I like the way it's spelled but hate that everyone misspells it.

    2. Would you ever name your child after DH? As a middle name but not the same exact name .. Jr/Sr etc. names are NMS

    3. Does your LO have any family names in their name? Yes, his MN is DH's FN
    4. Are there family names you plan to use later/for other gender? Possibly if we have another boy, not sure about a female ...we haven't agreed on any future names yet

BONUS: Do you LIKE your name? Why or why not? No ..I've never liked it, both my FN and MN seem old fashion and ugly IMO...

  • 1. Would you ever name your child after yourself? Umm, no.
    2. Would you ever name your child after DH? Actually, we almost did.  It is a strong family tradition with that name.  In the end, we decided all the good little boy nicknames for that particular name were taken and DH loved W's current name more.
    3. Does your LO have any family names in their name? Yes - his first name is his paternal grandfather's middle name.  His second name is my father's middle name.  W's first name is also the name of my grandfather's brother, DH's uncle who died at 2, and DH's great uncle who died in Europe in WW2 and the family war hero.  M's middle name is my grandmother's middle name.
    4. Are there family names you plan to use later/for other gender? Nope, since we're done. :)

BONUS: Do you LIKE your name? Why or why not? I do, but it was annoying as a child to be one of so many other H's.  It was cool that I found my name on everything though :D

  • 1. Would you ever name your child after yourself?  Maybe my middle name
    2. Would you ever name your child after DH? Yes times 2 - DS15 is named after his dad and my brother, DS#2 will be named after his dad (and grandfather - LO is a "third"
    3. Does your LO have any family names in their name? All my children have family names - DD has my grandmother's middle name, DS#1 has his dad/grandfather's first name and my brother's middle name and DS#2 will be named after DH/FIL
    4. Are there family names you plan to use later/for other gender?  I have no idea...

BONUS: Do you LIKE your name? Why or why not?  Love my name - I don't meet many other Lauras and my MN is from my mom - and together they work great.  I didn't used to like my first name because there were no nicknames for it.  I've over that now :)

  • 1. Would you ever name your child after yourself?  Nope, although if the weebs are girls, it would be funny to name them Jennifer Jr and Kelly Jr =P
    2. Would you ever name your child after DH?  He wouldnt allow it, although I do like to joke with him that we can name our daughter Kelly Jr  (see above)
    3. Does your LO have any family names in their name?  His middle name is Shaun, which is Dh's brother's name, he passed away a few years ago.
    4. Are there family names you plan to use later/for other gender?  Nope, probably not.  Although I would name a future son Brady (my little brother's name) if I didnt think it would hurt my other two siblings feelings.

BONUS: Do you LIKE your name? Why or why not?  I do, it has several nn options, and its easy.

Alex was named Alex due to we agreed we liked it as a middle name.  Alexander is his Great Grandfather's name as well as his Grandpa's middle name, and his great uncle's name.  So since we couldn't agree on a first name - his middle name bcame his first name

Willow's middle name is my mom's name.  Which is also my middle name.  And it's the name handed down to all the first/oldest girl's in my family.  I'm super happy we used it

  • 1. Would you ever name your child after yourself? No.
    2. Would you ever name your child after DH? No. I actually like a name that is similar to his name, but he doesn't like the idea of a child having a name even remotely close to him.
    3. Does your LO have any family names in their name? His middle name, Jackson, is my maiden name.
    4. Are there family names you plan to use later/for other gender? Yes, his great-grandmother's name will be our daughter's middle name if we have one. I would actually consider it as a first name, but it's VERY similiar to a friend's name, so people would think we would be naming her after her.
BONUS: Do you LIKE your name? Why or why not? I don't MIND it. But it was the most popular name of 1982, so I never got to be an individual. Actually, when I was PG and waiting for an ultrasound, the nurse called for Jennifer and four of us stood up. She amended it to Jennifer C., and two of us were left standing. Ha!

    2. Would you ever name your child after DH? No, DH;s first name is pretty common and he hates both his middle names
    3. Does your LO have any family names in their name? Yes, DD's middle name is DH's paternal grandmother's name. I wanted it for the first name, but DH didn't like the potential cruel nicknames kids might come up with.

BONUS: Do you LIKE your name? Why or why not? I didn't as a kid as it is unusual so could never find it on anything nor could anyone spell it. Now, I can always tell when it is a telemarketer on the phone or someone who doesn't know me as they pause before saying my name or mispronounce it.

  • 1. Would you ever name your child after yourself? My middle name yes (and I did), not my first name. My aunt's 1st name is DeLana and so is my Grandma's (she's the 3rd child, both girls before her). Even if it is a double standard I always thought it was strange when women use their 1st name for their child's 1st name. I don't think it's strange for a man though.
    2. Would you ever name your child after DH? His middle name yes. His first name, hell.no. TJ's real name is Tyrone, so we won't be passing that one on.
    3. Does your LO have any family names in their name? Yes, her middle name (Rey) is my middle name, and also my Aunt & Grandpa's middle name.
    4. Are there family names you plan to use later/for other gender? Should I twist TJ's arm into another kid (or two) I'd like to keep their middle names as family names.

BONUS: Do you LIKE your name? Why or why not? I've always liked my name, and never really cared that I had to go by Jen/nifer "C" growing up.

    3. Does your LO have any family names in their name? He is named after his late great grandfather on one side and his late grandfather on the other.
    4. Are there family names you plan to use later/for other gender? We haven't decided. This name was so easy I think there will be some difficulty naming the next one.

BONUS: Do you LIKE your name? Why or why not? I like my name. It is unusual and unique to a certain extent. It does get kinda annoying having to constantly spell it and pronounce it all the time.

    4. Are there family names you plan to use later/for other gender?  My middle name is Anne after my grandmother and we may use that if we have a girl as her middle name.

BONUS: Do you LIKE your name? Why or why not?  Yes, I've always loved my name.  It's constantly misspelled and often mispronounced, but I love that it's unique.
  • 1. Would you ever name your child after yourself? Nope
    2. Would you ever name your child after DH? Sure. I actually want to name a girl after him. He won't go for it though. I understand why. My name could be used that way too, and I would feel wierd about a son being named after me.
    3. Does your LO have any family names in their name? TBD, but our family has a history of using family names. I am not apposed to it.
    4. Are there family names you plan to use later/for other gender? Probably as middle names.

    4. Are there family names you plan to use later/for other gender? My Dad passed away and I've always thought I would like to use his name as a middle name if we have a son. Especially because my Dad was an only child and had 2 girls. I thought it might be a nice way to carry on his name. So far I haven't found any combination using his name that I like.

I know it's a family name, but I admit that I raised an eyebrow, especially since their son's name isn't a family name.So ...1. 2. Would you ever name your child after DH?see above.  But DH's family uses the dad's first name as a middle name, so that's Ben's middle name.  and Cooper's middle name is my dad's name.  No real reason - we couldn't think of a middle name and it seemed like it would be nice to have some reason for a middle name instead of just grabbing something random.
    3. Does your LO have any family names in their name?Yes see above.
    4. Are there family names you plan to use later/for other gender? No more babies.

  • 1. Would you ever name your child after yourself?  Nah, I think kids should have their own identity including first name.  I don't do Juniors.
    2. Would you ever name your child after DH?  Same
    3. Does your LO have any family names in their name?  Yes, Elizabeth is my middle name (as well as SILs) and is a family name on both sides.
    4. Are there family names you plan to use later/for other gender?  Yes, if we have a boy he will be John Richard (John after my dad and lots of other ancestors, Richard after DH's grandpa who died right after Xmas '09 when we announce our pregnancy; also it's my mom's brother's name.)  If we have another girl I'd like to do another family middle name but am not sure which one yet (I think first name will be- if I can convince DH, which I think I can- Georgia, NN George.)

BONUS: Do you LIKE your name? Why or why not?  I do!  When I was very young I didn't because it rhymed with pain and other things, but I think it's super unique for a girl and I love that it's a family name (mom's maiden.)

  • 1.  No, the thought never crossed my mind.

    2.  No, only because in our religion it's bad luck to name a child after someone living.

    3.  Mia was named after my grandma (her middle name) and Audrey was named after DH's grandma (middle name) and great grandma (Audrey)

    4.  There are other names I like and have a boy name picked out but as of right now, the plan is no more kids!

Bonus:  No, not particularly.  I always get jokes in regards to the movie "Carrie."

  • My BIL and SIL have talked about what they'd like to name their future kids (which seems odd since they're not even TTC yet).  [ETA: Not odd to think about it, but odd to tell family.] They want to use my (deceased) FIL's name for a boy and my SIL's name for a girl.  She was given her grandmother's name and wants to use it again.  She goes by a full name, so hopefully they'll use a nickname or something for the daughter, to ease confusion.

    1. Would you ever name your child after yourself?  Never
    2. Would you ever name your child after DH? Yes, I don't mind passing down the dad's name.  My brother is the 2nd, my ex-b/f is a 3rd, and his friend was a 4th... so it's not unusual to me.  But my DH was not interested.  Worked out ok b/c then we can use other names we like. :-)
    3. Does your LO have any family names in their name?  Well, he's not here, yet, but his name won't be a family name.  However, his initials are important on my side.
    4. Are there family names you plan to use later/for other gender? Nope, again we're picking from names that we just happen to like.

BONUS: Do you LIKE your name? Why or why not?  Hells no!  My dad gave me an awful first name.  My mom chose a better middle name.  I do like my nickname, though, which is all most people have known of me since 5th grade. :-)

    2. Would you ever name your child after DH? His middle name, but not his first name..
    3. Does your LO have any family names in their name? Yes, DH's Dad and my Dad both share the same middle name of "Wesley" so it was an easy choice to give Jacob the middle name of Wesley!

    4. Are there family names you plan to use later/for other gender?
    Probably not...

BONUS: Do you LIKE your name? Why or why not? Eh..it's ok. The spelling isnt common and people mispronounce my name often. I do like it more not though than when I was younger!

  • 1. Would you ever name your child after yourself?

    No.

    2. Would you ever name your child after DH?

    No.

    3. Does your LO have any family names in their name?

Yes. My brother, dad and grandpa were all Charles Middle Name. My bro doesn't have any kids so I thought I'd keep the Charles going a little so it's LO's middle name.

    4. Are there family names you plan to use later/for other gender?

Maybe. We had planned to name LO (if he was a girl) after my grandma. But now I'm not sure what we'd name the next one if it's a girl.

BONUS: Do you LIKE your name? Why or why not?

I do. It's a common name that's not TOO common.

  • 1. Would you ever name your child after yourself? No.  You should only do that if you're cool enough, like Lorelei Gilmore.
    2. Would you ever name your child after DH? And have another boooooring name running around out there? No.
    3. Does your LO have any family names in their name? Yes.  Her middle name is my mom's middle name.
    4. Are there family names you plan to use later/for other gender? Yes.  Our first pick for a boy's name is my FIL's middle name.  We picked it because we really like it though, the significance is just a bonus.  In general, I like using family names for middle names.

BONUS: Do you LIKE your name? Why or why not? Yep.  Because it was (at the time) uncommon and I like the way my full name sounds.

Ha!
Ha!! The same thing happened to me at one of my pre-natal visits, they called "Jennifer" and me and two others stood up.

Happened to me to.  Heck with the name Jennifer I've gotten used to just not responding when my name is called because they are probably looking for somebody else!

  • 1. Would you ever name your child after yourself? Nope - at least not directly. I don't believe in calling/yelling/talking to a child with the parenting voice and tagging my or my husbands name onto it - just too strange for me. Now I would use my first name as a middle or as part of a name - Angel can be found in lots of names, but Evangeline springs to mind, especially with the different sounds. I don't know if I'd be gutsy enough to use it as a first name though.
    2. Would you ever name your child after DH? No - again, I love saying my guys name and I put a lot of love into how I say it. I just can't fathom using the parenting voice and his name.
    3. Does your LO have any family names in their name? No, and neither will the next one. There's only one or two names I like in our family, and they're not attached to people I like. We toyed with incorporating my mom's name into a name, but it didn't feel right. So I figure between keeping my mom around the kids, passing along stories and showing them how much I love her, the honorific side of that is covered.
    4. Are there family names you plan to use later/for other gender? If we were having a boy, we have three family names in minde. 1) Lawrence - his gpa's name, which inspired his mom's name and his uncles name, and his late brother's name is in there as well. I love the W and eight letters. 2) Leland - my guy isn't really on board with this one, or rather there are others he likes more, but this is one of my old man guilty pleasure names and my guy's father's middle name. 3) Hudson - not a direct family name, but my guy's grandfather was on the pit crew for a Hudson Hornet, and I have a picture of the four-man crew hunkered down in front of it. After seeing the movie Cars, the story came out and we've had it on the list for a middle, although my guy is pushing for a first.

BONUS: Do you LIKE your name? Why or why not? I love my name! I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm narcissistic about it. I have companies, clothes and all kinds of kitchy crap with my name on it - it's awesome. Most people on the name board will list it when it comes to a poll about stripper names, but I don't mind. I rock my name. :)
