Considering an elective ultrasound

I'm really considering scheduling an elective ultrasound now that my a/s has been pushed back a whole week to the end of May.  I found a local place that does a 3d scan for $75, which doesn't seem too bad.

Have any of you gotten an elective scan done?  Do you think it was worth the money?  Did the place require your doctor's consent?

The place I'm looking at says they can usually get you in within a week...that would be an awesome mother's day present right?!

Re: Considering an elective ultrasound

  • I had one done for the same price as an early gender determination. I'm very impatient and could not wait to find out the gender, so I could begin decorating. The 3d technology was definitely amazing and I'm going back for a longer viewing when I'm about 30 weeks.

  • Perfect Mother's Day present! Our elective scan was amazing and I love that we found out the sex in a comfy family environment where we could be loud and cry. They require that either you show them your last u/s or have your OB fax them a form stating you are receiving care, at least that was what the place I went to required.

  • Haha I tried to be patient, I really did.... But I seriously don't think I can wait til the end of May.  Plus, I really wanted to be able to start on the nursery before DH's family comes to visit in early June.  His mom has commented a few times how she wants to "decorate our nursery" for us, which I am not okay with.  I think it's something that DH and I should do since, you know, it's our kid and all.  I think I'm going to try to talk DH into it.

I didn't even think of being able to be in a more comfortable environment when we find out...good point!  I just read through the FAQ's on the site and it says that they will not contact my doctor, but require that I provide proof that I'm receiving prenatal care, which isn't a problem.

Yay!  Wish me luck talking to DH tonight!

  • Mine was $99 and worth every penny.  I loved it.  No Drs consent required since it's just an u/s.

    I'd say treat yourself.

  • I had one as well and it was worth every penny. Nothing beats getting the chance to see LO. :) It was a great experience.

Mine did require a Drs consent though which they took care of on their own. All I did was show up and give them the Dr information.

I say go for it! :)

Yeah, use that as part of your selling point to DH! Looking back at our a/s it was a colder environment and I know of some Sept. moms who said they were disappointed with how the tech revealed it to them or didn't try very hard to see because they had more important measurements to take, etc. At least with an elective you know they will try their hardest to get a peek, as long as baby is cooperative.

  • I would go for it!! We had one and it was such a wonderful exciting experience... We were Team Green last time... I've had quite a few u/s both pregnancies and some of the techs suck. I was worried we would get a boring, monotone tech for our big reveal.. So that was my stipulation on finding out this time... That we do it at an elective place so I knew it would be special as opposed to a hospital.

This would be just my luck...I'd wait til the end of May and baby wouldn't cooperate and we STILL wouldn't know what we're having haha. Stick out tongue

Also, at our elective u/s... If they can't tell the sex because of babys position you come back as many times as it takes at no additional charge.

  • We did ours at 16 1/2 weeks and we paid $75 for a 2D and were only supposed to get 4 pics but since they had a training tech (after the pro got the money shot) we got like 12 pics so to me it was worth it, and who knows when I will get my A/S. I'm looking at around 22 wks. I'm glad I did!!

  • We had an early 3D gender determination one done as well, and it was amazing. $85 and I think we got to see baby play for almost an hour! The lady that did ours was so great, she really created the experience. I think they're totally worth it!! She only required a picture of an earlier ultrasound and we are definitely going back later on to see the baby with fuller features.

  • I booked right after coming home from the dr's 2D one because I couldnt see any details, my husband couldnt come (I took my mom and MIL) and I had to wait till 2 whole weeks after the u/s to find out the gender. IT WAS AMAZING!!! The detail was so great, we not only got the gender right away (it's a boy) but it was displayed on big flat screen TV's, there was classical music playing in the backround, and we go to see sooooo much detail!!! We saw him yawning, moving his little arms around!! It was so exciting... We went at 20 weeks, and my husband right away asked if we could go back again! It was WELL worth the $75 and we left with a cd full of pictures!
  • I couldn't recommend getting an elective ultrasound enough! The place I've gotten mine done just requires the name of your OB, and that's it. I went at 10 weeks, 12, 16 and 18. I'll be going back at 24, 28, and 32. Since this is my family's first grandchild (and my first too, obviously), it's really special to see him grow and develop.

The environment was amazing. The lights are dimmed, they play lullaby music, and the techs make you feel special, and they try hard to create memories for you. The last time I went, it was a 15-minute session with 2d/3d and 4d live, with a dvd and cd of pictures (about 20), all set to music we brought ourselves. Best $75 I've ever spent.

It will definitely trump your OB's ultrasounds any day, and you'll have such great momentos and memories from it. I say do it!
