1st bday party "entertainment" - WWYD?

I can't believe the Bean's first birthday is this week! Sigh...where does the time go??? We're throwing the bean a big first year shindig for her (and us). At our house for a couple of hours. We invited friends and family, even neighbors...basically people who've helped us survive the first year. I'm in mad party prep mode because this ended up being bigger than what we planned for, but its all good. There will be about 10 kids aged 1-6 and a handful of itty bitty babies.  I wasn't planning on having any entertainment/activities for the kids because this really wasn't supposed to be a "kids party"...  but now I'm worried that they'll be bored or whatever. I'm not concerned about the <1 babies, parents will probably hold them or they can even amuse themselves with the Bean's toys. What about the older kids? Have you been to other parties (bday or other) where there was something to occupy the kids to you thought was a good idea?  Or do you think the kids will just amuse themselves just fine?  (I'm thinking small things btw...no bounce houses, water slides or clowns :)  Thanks!

  • What about having a folding table with some coloring books and crayons or play-doh. Dollar tree is a great way to find some non-expensive things

  • I don't think you need to but you could pick up some coloring books, crayons and stickers for them. That was you have something just in case, but IMHO most likely the kids will all play together and ammuse themseves.
  • For E's 2 parties we basically set out E's toys and let the kids play. We had kids ages 1-10 at both parties and they entertained themselves for well over 4 hours. Honestly, I think you are overthinking it, and let the kids entertain themselves. You will be amazed at how well they do.
  • I'm not having any entertainment at N's first birthday party.  It will mainly be outside and we have a swing set and I'll put out some balls and things (oh and the sand table).  Inside will just be the normal spread of toys.  In years past, the kids have mainly just played with whatever toys I had out - and I usually limit what's out and able to be played with.  (This year we have from 1-8 year olds).
Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it.

  • I had bubbles and a ball pit (it was actually a gift for M for his birthday) but the big kids loved it.  You could also do sidewalk chalk.

  • We just had some out door toys out and bubbles. The older kids seemed content to just chase each other in circles.

  • Bubbles and a ball pit!  Just get a cheap plastic pool, fill it with those chuck e cheese type balls and you're good.  Get a bubble machine or get another plastic pool or something smaller, fill it with bubbles and put a bunch of wands in it!

  • I haven't really had entertainment for birthday parties up until this year for N.  I just have let the kids run around and play....we have a TON of toys in a playroom so I just let the kids play in there.

This year we got a jumpy for Natalie's party.

I did go to a 1 year olds party where there were a bunch of kids, and the mom got a jumpy to keep the kids out of the house.  It worked well and they loved it.
