Babies: 0 - 3 Months

oh, Moby...Good idea, bad idea?

I've been interested in a Moby wrap forever...but I've held off until now to really think of getting one because of all of the back and forth things I've read about it on here.

If you have a Moby, could you tell me the pros and cons?  I know it's almost summertime, which means it'll be hot in it, but I'm also really into having an affordable way to carry DD.  I've seen some mothers using it in ways that dont look that hot, either.  I am VERY tempted to order one today....

I think there are much cooler options for summer.  I'd also suggest that since IMO a moby isn't very supportive past 15 pounds, it would be a better investment for you to get a better carrier that can take you through toddler hood and be used for back carries when you are ready.  My siggy has lots of info on the different options.

Personally, I use woven wraps - cooler, more supportive, and more versatile.  As you can see in my siggy - I still wrap my 30 pound toddler when needed.

  • I'm also on the fence about this.  I found this website that has wrap rentals:

  • ok, so if I don't go with a Moby I'm thinking a MaiTai looks good.  Those can be used for toddlers, correct?  I looked at a couple of your siggy links but am still at odds...I was going to get a Moby (or something I can get at Wal-Mart online) because I have gift cards that will cut my costs...

  • We love our Moby, although I did invest in a wrap for pp's reasons for this LO.  I still use the moby, though.  It's great - it does get a bit hot in the summer, although I used it up until DS was starting to walk and had little interest in being carried that much, so it worked for us over 15 lbs (I found whenever it got to be too stretchy, it just needed to go through the wash and it'd be fine, but then I had nothing to compare it to).  It is SO much better for your back than a SSC or sling which doesn't evenly distribute the weight - DH has even tried it this time around (he has a terrible back) and has commented on how much more comfortable it is (he's also used my woven).

I think it's a very affordable way to get into baby wearing.

  • I tried the Moby and it just wasn't for me. Too much fabric, felt hot, and the boys weren't happy. I have heard good things about the Mei Tei's. I haven't tried that yet.

  • I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Bali Baby Stretch by Gypsymama.  It's cool and versatile and LO loves it too.  No back pain. DH wears her in the Ergo which is also great support- she still needs the infant insert cause she's little.  Not sure if those are avail at walmart though but I just wanted to offer other options than the Moby which seems to be the most popular around here.

  • Do NOT get the Moby. I purchased it and the fabric is ridiculously long. I was wrapping the stupid thing for at least 3 minutes and by the time I was done I felt like a mummy and there was no way I was putting my son in it. Any wrap that requires a video is a No Go and you really need to see the video to figure this thing out and even then it's entirely too complicated. I'm 5'3 and it wrapped around me so many times w/ so much extra material I'm not exaggerating I really looked and felt like a mummy. Purchase something less complicated.
Due March 14th w/ my first. A little boy to be named Nigel Jr. :)

Yes, a mei tai can be used with toddlers and for back carries.  Sadly, Walmart/BRU/Buy Buy Baby/Target don't have any good carriers except the moby and sometimes the ergo.

Buying used is a good way to save money.  The FSOT forum on thebabywearer.com has tons of options.

i have a moby but also a mei tei. i like the mei tei better.

i had trouble getting the moby tight enough and it took me awhile to get it on. I mean, I did only use it maybe 5 or 6 times but i couldn't get comfortable.

the mei tei is so much easier. definitly recommend it over the moby.

  • I have a Babyhawk (Mei tei) and LOVE it. Cannot recommend it enough.

I was all set to buy a Moby, but a bunch of women I talked to said it just wasn't worth it past 15lbs. I still think the Moby looks more secure for a newborn, but I can see how it would outlive its usefulness fast.
