What state ballot questions are you most concerned about?

Here in MA one of the ballot questions is to get rid of state income tax - with no alternative tax suggested. Yeah, not smart - it will be terrible if it passes.

A lot of my family is in CA and FL, both of which have gay marriage rights on the table.

What do you have in your state that is most important to you?

  • I'm in MA too and I think the income tax one is HUGE.  I come from a family of teachers and public workers and this question is really bothering me.  I highly doubt it would ever pass anyway but honestly, its scary.

  • I know, a lot of my friends are teachers. It is CRAZY. The scary part is that it was on the ballot before (in 2000, I think) and 40 something% approved it, with no advertising like there is this year. I am worried that people who are not educated on the subject will just see "no more income tax" and vote for it, especially with this economy.

    Ugh.

  • Proposition 200 in AZ is the Payday Loan Reform Act which will keep lenders in business but will have many restrictions placed upon the businesses themselves.  My dh and I own 2 of these, however, we have transitioned to more of a auto title loan business which is less of a gamble.  If the act doesn't pass, all of the other places will shut down and we will be busier than now.  If it passes, a majority of the Payday lenders will still go out of business because of the restrictions and we'll eventually get more clients.   I'll vote for it, but I believe it will cripple most of those stores.

  • I'm just googling now bc I realized I have no idea what's on the ballot.  One measure is to triple the sales tax in Milwaukee.

  • Aren't the ones in MA non-binding?  Years ago they voted to roll the tax back to 5% and they still haven't done that yet.  And, hasn't the dog one been on the ballot for the last 10yrs???  DH works in MA sometimes, so we pay the tax there.  My parents are both voting to eliminate it just because they know it'll never happen even if it does pass.

I must be a loser because I can't find any information on whether there are any ballot questions in NH.  We do our Town voting in March which addresses most of the tyipcal ballot question issues, but I can't find anything for tomorrow.  Any ideas where that might be???

  • I'm in CT.  We have 2 questions this year.  One is to appoint a Constitutional Convention that can decide whether constitutional rights should/could be changed.  They try to pass it off as giving voters a chance to voice their opinions, but if you read the question we really have no more rights...the convention decides.

The second is to allow people that are 17 to vote in primaries if they will be 18 and able to vote by election day.

  • Daisy - you should be able to Google "my town and state sample ballot" and see the full ballot for the election.

The income tax question is binding in MA - we also usually have questions that are non-binding, but the income tax, greyhound racing, and marijuana penalty questions are binding.

  • I'm in MA and it's undoubtedly question 1.  I work for a non-profit that is funded by a state agency...my job greatly depends on that not passing!!!

  • We have another prop here in AZ having to do with the hiring of illegals in the state.  I work mostly with landscapers so this affects them hugely.  We already have a law in place that punishes the employer even if they unknowingly hired someone not of legal status.  Its also having a huge impact on restaurants and other service industries.  This new prop will punish the individual more than the employer and will take away some of the awful paperwork that they're forced to do now to make sure their employees are legal.  Vote Yes on 202 AZ nesties!
