I think I (re)cracked a rib this morning. A ?

I am so annoyed.  I had a horrible cough back in early Feb.  I coughed so hard that I think I might have cracked a rib.  It hurt so badly and took over 2 months for the pain to go away.  I self-medicated with ibuprofen and waited it out.

This morning I sneezed and heard & felt a little pop.  Immediately the pain came back in full force.  $#%*@!  I never went to a doctor because a cracked rib is one of those things they can't do anything about.  But should I?  I mean, does anyone know if anything really bad could happen from a cracked rib?  Now I'm getting paranoid about it all over again.   Unless there's a good argument for going, I'm just going to pop the ibuprofen and hope it heals faster this time.  Ugh!

  • You might have actually popped a rib head out (not a huge deal, but painful). If it doesn't feel better in a couple of days you might want to consider seeing a chiropractor. Of course, make sure they do xrays before any adjusting. If it is a rib head they can usually just pop it back in.

  • In college I cracked a rib from a really bad cough I had.  It took about 6 weeks to go away, but yeah, they didn't realyl do anything in the ER, just a chest x-ray. One thing they check for is pleurisy, which I'm not sure they can do anything to treat unless there's lots of fluid at the sight.  I'm not sure if I would go in or not.  Chest x-rays are $$$.  They did recommend I get a bone density test, and that all came back fine as well.
  • Ouch!  Hopefully it's not a cracked rib and if it is, may it heal quickly!

  • Yikes!  That sucks!  I know there isn't much they would be able to do for a cracked rib, but it could be something else.  If it were me, I would get it checked out just in case, even though it's a pain in the a$$ to go to the dr.

  • Ouch!  I'd have it checked.  The fact that this has happened twice in a few months means it may not have healed well the first time, or there is something else going on.
