TTC After a Loss

My vag is broken..and ?

So I heard back from my midwife. I had not one but two issues: a yeast infection (which I already treated with a previous prescription she wrote) and a bacterial infection. My poor lady bits Sad

So I am wondering if the BV caused my recent miscarriages and/or is interferring with me getting pregnant again???. I am really happy to have a diagnosis and pills to take..although she said we can't have sex for a WEEK! Yikes. That is way too long LOL. It is good timing though. It would have been so much worse to get this diagnosis during FWP week.

Anyone know much about BV and its affect on conception and/or 1st tri losses. TIA

  • i had BV and was taking medication for it when i got my BFP. i did SOOOOO much research on this (dr. google, i hate him) and some said yes and some said no.

i was told to stop taking my meds now, and to come in a little early because of that and my cramps. i asked my doctor about it, and he said no that it has no connection to miscarriage, the only thing it's connected to is preterm labor.

however, i still wonder because some websites did say it was related to early miscarriage but i keep telling myself that dr. google isn't right, that my doctor is.

as for it interferring, i am not sure. i am curious to know if it does though, so if you get an answer let me know! because i was never put back on meds for it after the loss, so if i still have it - i don't want it interferring. i need to go back in and get tested again. i only took half of my script before.

    *EDIT: posted too soon.

  • it can cause miscarriage from what I've read. and it can cause a "hostile" environment and prevent conception. I am so glad you got a diagnosis and can prevent future difficulties.

  • I am sorry you are dealing with this.  How long have you had the BV?  What meds are you taking to clear it up and for how long do you have to take the meds?  I don't have much knowledge on BV but I would think that once it is cleared up conception should not be a problem but having it awhile could have been a factor with the miscarriage.  Did you ask your dr?

I am pretty sure I have had it since December (around the time I got pregnant) because I was having issues with irritation/cracks on my vagina.  I thought that I caused it from wiping too much (checking for bleeding) but I guess it was BV this whole time. It just kept coming back and resurrfaced during my 2ww the next cycle I got a BFP (which also ended a few days later).

My midwife said that it didn't cause my losses but may interfere with getting pregnant again. I am still not so sure that it wasn't a contributing factor though.

  • I don't know anything about conception, but I have read that bacterial vaginosis can cause miscarriages in early pregnancy.

I hope both infections clear up soon.  ((Big HUGS))

  • Ugh I had the same problem last month. Bv & yeast. I don't believe it can cause m/c, I know PID which I think can be caused by untreated BV can, but certainly your "balance" is off pH wise when you get those infections, which can create a hostile environment. The antibiotics are safe, they give them to pg women. I think the diflucan is not, but its good you aren't fwp week! Just from my own experience, I'd invest in a good probiotic or just some acidophilus capsules to help even you out. Plus if you're on flagyl it helps w/ the digestive issues antibiotics can cause. I hope you are feeling better soon and in good time to fwp... think of all the energy you'll have built up over a week!

  • BV sucks.  i had it my past two cycles at time of ovulation - im convinced it's one of the reasons why i didnt conceive.  although thatmight just be wishful thinking.  i did talk  to my RE about it and he said that there is no known study that BV prevents conception - i.e., there is no known study that says the sperm has trouble swimming upstream because of the BV.  women can get pregnant on it.  although, i do think it creates a more hostile vaginal environment for the sperm.  i had to take the oral pills both cycles bc my OB didnt want the gel to interfere with my CM.  but the pills dont work as well for me.  so after my second cycle of having it, i treated myself with the gel (that i had already had a prescription for).  i have my annual  w. my OB tomorrow...so we will see if it is gone...i dont have any symptoms right now.

it is related to pre-term birth.  and there are some studies that say it can cause a miscarriage - although it would have had to travel into the uterus for that...most women catch it earlier while it is still hanging around in the vaginal/cervix area.

the reason i kept getting it is bc i was on antibiotics for 3 weeks - two different kinds.  if i keep getting it, i am going to ask my RE to do IUI to bypass the vaginal canal, bc i just dont think it's a good environment for sperm.  my CM looked really weird last cycle bc of it.
