uneventful (and slightly disappointing) appt today

had an appointment today and we were hoping we'd get to find out the sex today.  turns out my doctor  didn't even plan on doing an ultrasound today.  we got to hear the heartbeat, which is always great, but we were really looking forward to seeing the bean today.

plus, i had planned on making copies of the ultrasound pics to include in the mother's day cards for the grandmas.  dang it.

  • Aww, sorry that you didn't get to see your bean today.  I had my appointment as well but LO was being uncooperative and we couldn't find out the gender.

well nuts!  she said the heartbeat sounded great though.  i've been having a feeling that it's a boy.  and most people think it is too.  the owt is that a lower heart rate indicates a boy, right?

I'm sorry you're disappointed.  Did you ask at the last appointment when the next ultrasound would be?  Other than doing an elective ultrasound on your own, almost everyone around here has said their OB office doesn't do the anatomy scan (where you can also find out the sex of the baby) until 18-20 weeks, or later.  Some have had it earlier, but most of us have to wait.

Did you get to schedule the big ultrasound for the next appointment, I hope?  It should only be a few more weeks, I know waiting isn't easy.

Did they tell you they would do an u/s? Other than an elective (& OOP) u/s, we only get 3: NT scan, anatomy scan & 3rd Tri growth scan ( do to placenta issues).

My normal monthly appointments have been : PIAC, get weighted, and listen to the hb. As I get firther along, they will start to measure my stomach & check my cervix but that's it.

And are you sure the OB office does the anatomy scan?  In my experience the patient usually goes out of office to a perinatologist.

And 15 weeks is too early for an anatomy scan....

ETA:  I think you're expecting too much.  Most appointments will be uneventful.  At least, you should hope they are.

This.  Uneventful = Good.  Most women don't find out until at least 18 weeks.  What you see on the bump is not the norm.

Double this. Mine is scheduled at 20 weeks. You'll know when it is scheduled because they add about an hour to your appointment.

Most appointments so far have been weight, urine, bp, listen to the heart beat and answer any questions I have - 15 to 20 minutes tops.

Your OB's office should be able to give you an idea of what weeks major things like ultrasounds, blood test, diabetes tests take place so you can be prepared ahead of time and not be disappointed in the future.
