BF mommas - a ?

Do any of you have a LO that is STTN regularly? If so - tell me your secret! DD gives me 3-4 stretches, for which I am not complaining, but I am curious. TIA!

Re: BF mommas - a ?

  • not yet...my LO is the same.  we bed share so feedings during the night are just a matter of popping my nipple in his mouth.  most time he won't fully wake up and is right back to sleep.  LO is 7wks old btw.  will begin transitioning to crib by 15wks.  but i'm also curious who's LO's sttn and how they got to that point.

I get 5 straight hours at best.  Usually in the early morning hours, but that is an improvement :)

My only trick is I wait for his fists to unclench before trying to move sleeping LO from my lap to his bassinet.

  • We're on our 5th week of STTN. Last night was our longest stretch of 9.5 hours, but it's usually around 7-8 hours. I think he definitely takes after his mom in loving his sleep because after waking up and nursing in bed, we'll nap together for another 1-2 hours. We usually start getting ready for bed around 10pm. He is nursed, gets his last diaper change and I bring him upstairs to his bassinet. I enter the room and only turn on the side lamp so the room is relatively dark. I turn on his white noise machine, swaddle, hold him for a few minutes to say good night and lay him down. He usually just lays there for a few minutes looking around and will be asleep within 5 minutes.

There was a pamphlet that came with the white noise machine that basically said to put the LO in the bassinet/crib while they're awake so eventually they learn to associate that place with sleeping. Before, we used to rock him to sleep and put him in the bassinet--only to have him wake up a few seconds later and cry so we'd do this over and over until 4 or 5am at times. I wanted to pull my hair out!

There are times that he will cry a bit once I lay him down, but if I turn on his mobile & step back, he will quiet down and drift off. And just to note, he's usually up for a few hours...maybe 3 at the most....before I start getting him ready for bed so he's ready to sleep once I lay him down.

I still get up in the middle of the night to pump because I really can't go longer than 4-5 hours before my boobs get engorged and leaky. But after I pump and my head is back on the pillow, I am out until the LO starts to wake up.

Hope that helps. I'm definitely counting my blessings with the LO letting us sleep.

  • DD has been STTN pretty much since day one, I don't think it has anything to do with anything I do, it's just her. She sleeps in a bassinet next to my bed. I nurse her around 11 every night and sometimes she falls asleep hard before she goes in the bassinet, so she stays asleep. Other times she wakes up just a bit when I move her, but she goes right back to sleep. We started out swaddling her in a Sleep Sack, but now that it's so hot we're just using a Summer Infant Swaddle Me. I also keep the room pretty dark when she goes in the bassinet.

  • i might get flamed by this but here goes!  we have been giving LO one bottle of formula every night for her last feeding before deep sleep.  we started this at 4 weeks because she was up EVERY hour nursing, i kid you not!  so my thought was she wasn't getting enough.  that worked REALLY well!  and now at 10 weeks she will sleep for 5-7 hrs. straight.  it is heaven!  BUT i've paid a price.  there have been many times where she fights my nipple throughout the day and would prefer the bottle!  it's getting a little better, but there are still battles.  for me, it's worth it though, to be able to sleep!

My LO gives us about 5-6 hrs, she usually wants to nurse every hour after 5:30pm. I usually changer her outfit and diaper about 8:45pm take her upstairs, nurse her, hold her for about 15 min and then put her in the co-sleeper. I put her in there even if she's awake like ckandi said. She will usually grunt, move around but eventually quiets down and falls asleep. I also make sure the room is dark, although I do have the tv on. It's not a full night of sttn but it's fine with me!

  • Most of the time, Luke sleeps 7-8 hours when we put him down between 9 and 10 p.m.  We give him a bath with nighttime bath soap and put a little bit of nighttime lotion on him.  The nights he gives us the 7-8 hour stretches are the nights we give him a bottle of pumped milk before bed.  My husband usually gives him the bottle, and I'll read him a book while he is eating.  If I nurse him, he usually only goes 4-5 hours.  We put him in bed awake in a non-swaddle sleepsack (just a wearable blanket that his arms pop out of), then turn on Soothe and Glow Seahorse -- one or two times through and he's out.  We also have a twilight turtle that we turn on that projects stars on the ceiling (I don't know that he can see them yet, but I like them).  He has slept in his crib in his room since the first night he was home; I think he really likes having the space.  The first time he wakes up, I change him, nurse him for about 10 minutes, and he goes right back to sleep.  I don't know if it's something we're doing, or if he's just a great baby.

DD is EBFd has been STTN for about two weeks. I think it's because we established a routine and she likes it.

I get her in a bath at 10 and do her last feeding at 10:30. She falls asleep while I rock her and is in her bassinet next to our bed by 11pm. She sleeps until anywhere between 5:30 and 8am, but 5:30 is the most common. She feeds then and usually goes back to sleep for an hour until DH gets up with her. She eats every 3-4 hours during the day.

We want to transition her to her crib in the nursery next week...we'll see how that goes! If she gives us a hard time, I might take a step back and keep her in the bassinet, but in her own room, then go to the crib from there. We'll see.

  • I know ya'll will be haters, but My DD has been sleeping through the night since week 1.  She finally goes down at about 11 pm, and sleeps till 6 or so most nights.  Although she cluster feeds non-stop from like 7 pm till 11 pm.  I can't put her down even for 5 minutes, and it gets painful at times, but she sleeps, and is happy.  I don't force eating on her, she wants to or needs to eat all evening,  which I don't know how much this will make it difficult when I want to go out for a few hours in the evening....  but for now its great.
