antibiotics - reg doc or OB?

Why on earth am I awake at 1:30 in the morning? I have a sore throat so painful I can't go back to sleep. It feels like someone has taken sandpaper to my entire throat, and I have almost no voice (not so good for a teacher!).

So when I call in sick in the morning, do I go see my regular doctor or call the OB first? I'm leaning toward regular doc, because at an earlier OB appt I asked about this potential and she said if it's nothing obstetrical I can see a regular doc. But I'm afraid my regular doc will just throw up her hands and say, "Well, you're pregnant, so..." and tell me to put on my big girl panties and deal with it, in so many words. Well, actually, MY doc probably won't do that but if I can't get in to see MY doc I don't like most of the others too much.

There are safe antibiotics during pregnancy, right? Have any of you guys gotten sick in non-pregnancy related ways and seen the regular doc?

Re: antibiotics - reg doc or OB?

  • Lurking here, but I have an answer.

My regular doc always referred me to my OB when I was pregnant.  For everything.

If you are sick, you'll need antibiotics.  It's riskier to NOT take them.  Your OB can decide.

    Hope that helps!  Feel better!

  • When I thought I had strep I called my OB. They told me I could go to my regular doctor, or a  walk-in clinic. They told me any normal med  for strep is safe to take. I never did go.

  • I think I'll make an appt with the regular doc but also call the OB. If nothing else, the regular doc and the OB are in the same building, so if the doc tries to shrug shoulders and say there's nothing they can do, perhaps I can just march them downstairs? :)

  • For anything other than pregnancy replated items my OB says regular dr.  If they prescribe anything I am supposed to check with the OB nurse.

I'd call my OB and see what they say - I had bronchitis earlier in my pregnancy and my OB wrote me a rx for antibiotics.
  • I went to the reg doctor last week (I love her, don't really care my OBs all that much).  She prescribed stuff for me, and when I questioned whether it was ok, she pulled out a manual that has information about safety of drugs for pregnancy and walked through each one with me.  She suggested I call the OB office just to let them know and make sure they didn't have a problem with me taking those meds.  Mine said most standard antibiotics (i.e., amoxicillin) are okay - it's when you get into narcotics and steroids that they put the brakes on.
