Hi all,
We are in the Seattle area right now and just not "feeling it". We're from here- left to go to Madison, WI- which we loved, and came back because we felt we should (lame, I know). But, it's just not clicking for us. Housing is absurdly expensive, the vibe is to businessy, I dunno, we just don't love it.
We have an almost 2 year old and are considering other nearby options (family in Seattle). what's Portland like? Pros and cons? Job opportunities? Schools? I've done some googling but I want your thoughts as moms.
What are the better neighborhoods to be in? We LOVE the old homes we see for sale that we can actually afford but I don't know if they are in good neighborhoods or not.
TIA!
Re: Anyone in/from Portland? Do you like it?
I think you should just move here cause our little men are so close in age! LOL
What are you looking for in the community you want to live in?
Community of perfection =
Lots of parks and kid-fantastic things to do
Lots of other kids around
Not way off the "beaten path" for commuting if we ever changed jobs
Walk friendly to coffee shops, library, restaurants
Liberal and progressive vibe
Not sketchy- I want to feel safe chillin' in my yard with a glass of wine at night and not worry about my car being broken into all the time
Good Schools
I know I won't necessarily get it all, but I'd like to!
Hi Tia,
I moved here 8 years ago and LOVE it! I wouldn't live anywhere else. I love Seattle, but this is a smaller, cheaper version (i guess). The neighborhoods totally depend on your budget. I'm a real estate agent and small business owner. If you need any help with rental or purchase, let me know (ashley@503prop.com).
Unemplyoment is obviously still a little high, but the schools are great. We have quite a few 9 and 10 star public school ratings in the Portland area.
Hope some of this info helped!

Love Love Love Portland!
It's a city feel with a town vibe, especially in the outskirts. You get all the opportunity for city stuff with community feel, even in the city proper. Lots of family stuff to do!
It's clean, safe, and WAY cheaper than Seattle! If you are looking for work... what fields? We are making strides in the right direction, but like most economies it's still a bit rough in lots of industries.

Hi! I moved to Portland from Wisconsin 4 years ago. I love it! The only reason it's not perfect is b/c all my friends/family are back in WI. I'm kind of in the opposite situation of you; someday, I will probably move back to WI.
I think Portland is similar to Seattle, but easier to get around/less traffic. I feel like it's less "businessy" too. Hope that helps!
