Yay! Omaha, and Nebraska, is getting it first free standing birth center! It will be opening later this fall in Bellevue, Nebraska! They are accepting clients right now! All prenatals will be done at Bellevue Medical Center until the Birth Center opens by the Amazing midwife, Heather Ramsey (CNM) or their collaborating physcian Dr. Brian Finley (who is also truly amazing & my favorite doctor to work with). You can get more information on their website bellevuebirthcenter.webs.com

Re: We are getting a Birth Center!!
That is so exciting!! I am all for having choices. . . though I gotta tell you, I am pretty sure that I will be going to a hospital with my first one. . . I am too scared to not have an option for Epidural if I want it. Still, can't hurt to check it out, right?
Can you HAVE any pain management services at a birthing center?
There are definitely other excellent pain management options that will be available at the birth center. These will include both medicated and non medicated options. The are going to have 2 AMAZING tubs! Better than at ANY of the local hospitals. In my experience as a doula the tub is one of the BEST pain management items for moms in labor. Every mom I have had use the tub has LOVED it!! There will be options available that are not typically available in the hospital as well, such as Sterile Water Injections. These are particularly effective for moms having intense back labor. The only providers I know of who do this as a form of pain management in Omaha are Certified Nurse Midwives. For some reason its not offered her routinely although it is an excellent option and used quite widely in the rest of the country. It is an option that does not affect baby as it is not a medication, just sterile water! All pain management options (including narcotic pain meds) except the epidural will be available. Moms who labor at the birth center can have an epidural if they transfer to Bellevue Medical Center. Moms cans also be seen at the birth center for all prenatal care but deliver at Bellevue Medical Center rather than at the birth center. The CNM will still attend your birth at the medical center. There are also wonderful midwives at Methodist (thats who I used with my last baby) and at UNMC. Please feel free to ask me any additional questions you might have about the birth center or about any local providers!
