Need recommendations for diaper bags for 2, outdoor toys for a 3 year old and...

Hello Ladies:

I am looking for some recommendations on a few things that we are in the market for.

First of all, I am on the hunt for a diaper bag that is suitable for a 3 year old and a newborn.  Keep in mind, Max still has a lot of items that we have to pack to take with us when we go out (diapers, bladder pads, meds, cup, pureed food, etc).

Secondly, Max's third birthday is a little over a week away.  The kid is swarming with indoor toys, so we are tell everyone to get things that he can play with outside.  I have on my list a picnic table with umbrella, a fun water hose attachment (he can't get into a swimming pool so thats out), and a wheelbarrow.  He already has a sand and water table.  Any other ideas that I can give family and friends?

The third thing I need ideas on is a gift for one of the doctors that has been with Max since he was 6 weeks old.  Dr. Ben is his nephrology fellow and will be leaving us for an attending job at CHOP (Children's Hospital of Philly).  This man is the absolute best thing that has ever happened to our family.  He is wonderful and will be greatly missed by all.  What do you get someone who had a hand in saving your son's life?

Thanks ladies.  I greatly appreciate any and all ideas that you ladies can give me :)

  • I have the Vera Bradley baby bag, it's working well for two right now.  I don't have much to pack in there for Noah, but I don't fill it so I'd imagine you'd have plenty of room for Max's stuff.

Our outside toys consist of a scooter (the Radio Flyer's my 1st scooter) a cozy coupe, a basket ball hoop, baseball tee, endless chalk and bubbles, water table, picnic table.  Meijer has an aisle of a bunch of cheap outdoor stuff...I just got him a plastic golf set and one of those velcro glove and ball sets, they were like $5.  He also just got a bubble mower for Easter, although the bubbles don't really work but he doesn't care.

Do you have a price range you're thinking of for the gift?

Around $50 or so. I am willing to go above that if it's really good :)

  • I'm no help on outdoor toys but I was thinking a nicely matted/personalized framed picture as a gift for Dr. Ben.  It seems like most doctors move around a bit as their career paths unfold, so a gift he could take with him and hang in his office would be great.

I am sure Max is a very special patient to him, having something to keep with him always would be nice.  Is there a particular shot of Max and Dr. Ben together?  Maybe just one great shot of Max's smiling face?

This is kind of what I was thinking

    I really like this idea.

  • I like Mrs.Cooley's idea as well. I'm sure he'd love something to remind him of your special guy.

As for outdoor toys, we get a lot of use out of our sandbox, climber, bubble mower. Plastic wiffle balls and bats, big plastic bouncy balls. N also has an outdoors-only plastic picnic basket filled with pretend food. She really enjoys setting up pretend picnics on her little outside table.

  • I think something personalized could be good.  You could do the picture frame suggested, or maybe a briefcase or laptop case if he carries either of those.  Not all guys are into personalized things though, I know my DH isn't.  If you're looking for something a little less traditional there are  "___ of the month clubs"  We did a beer one for DH's best man, but they've also got chocolate, cigars, salsa etc.  If you know of a special thing he likes I'm sure you could find it.  It's more expensive, i think the beer one was around $100 for 3 months.

The Vera Bradley diaper bag is the only one I've seen that's probably the size you need with the appropriate compartments.

    As for outdoor toys-

Little Tikes Tot Sports stuff- tee ball & bat, golf, bowling, etc...

Bubble mower, bubble wands (Meijer's $1 wands are the best and cheapest I've found), and bubble machine (blows lots of bubbles all at once)

We bought this truck for DS:  https://www.kmart.com/shc/s/p_10151_10104_004W092763211002P?prdNo=2&blockNo=2&blockType=G2

Can he have a splash pad like this one? https://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Sprinkle-Splash-Water/dp/B00248Z1ZU  We have one and DS likes that tons- easy to set up too (just plug in the hose)

    Large bouncy ball

Shovel to "help" with the landscaping, broom to "help" sweep

    Sidewalk Chalk

B played in one of these this weekend at a birthday party and LOVED it https://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Sprinkle-Splash-Water/dp/B00248Z1ZU

And I think I'm out of ideas...

As for a gift for Dr. Ben, I really like the idea of some sort of keepsake that he could hang in his office.  If you could find a nice 'thank you' poem (or better yet write something?) to put with the picture, that would make it even more special.

  • I'm using a Skip Hop Versa bag now. A lot of the other MoM's love the Skip HOp Studio bag. You can grab them for cheap on babysteals or Zulily from time to time for around the $50 price range.

Also, for a gift, have you thought about doing exactly what you said as far as the gift? He was the hand that helped saved your son's life, so give him Max's hand impression with an inspirational quote. Impress in some clay, harden, and put it into a shadowbox with other memntos about Max's journey. I bet he would keep it in his office.

I"m no help with the diaper bag.  I just use a bag I found at Target.

DS's go-to outdoor toys are LT t-ball, LT golf, anything he can use to dig with (shovels, plastic trucks, rake), chalk, bubbles, frisbee, soccer ball and net, water table, sand box.  My aunt just gave him some bug stuff that he loves - a magnifying glass, bug catcher, butterfly net.

I like the frame idea.  :)
