Babies: 0 - 3 Months

When did you 1st give paci?

I remember reading it's best to wait till BFing is established before giving pacifiers and I'm feeling like it is now, but is it still too early?  (He's 3 days old now) When did you start giving a paci?

Re: When did you 1st give paci?

  • I think that's total BS. Most, if not all people I know have given a pacifier and never had any nipple confusion, myself included. I was all worried about it the first week, but got over it real quick. I gave DS his pacifier when he was about a week old. I was so mad I waited that long. It's been a life saver.

  • Ha. the first night we were home, which was DS's 2nd night of life.

We BF.  He gained 4lbs in the first month.  I do not think he has any nipple confusion.

Our pedi told us to wait a week (as long as BF was well established) but I've known lots of people who give a paci from day one. The hospital gave my LO one at a day old due to jaundice and her being very unhappy under the light. She never had a problem.
  • we did it the day we came home from the hospital and we haven't had any issues.

  • We did paci's and a bottle 1x per day in the 1st week and never had issues... i think the whole "nipple confusion" topic is overdramatized.

Going to do the same thing with #2

  • I wanted to make sure bf'ing was well established and had an arbitrary number in my mind of 4 weeks. Around 3 wks we were still struggling with bf'ing (not a great latch) but I caved and it saved my nipples! I wouldn't say I regret waiting 3 wks though.

About 4 weeks.  We wanted to wait as long as possible, and she was just inconsolable so we gave it to her.  She really doesn't like it that much, though, she maybe uses it once every couple of days.

  • DD had her first paci within hours of being born.  She was born with Myelomeningocele (Spina Bifida) and had an open lesion on her back which seemed to be causing her pain.  It took a paci to make her settle.  She had to have bottles before we could start breastfeeding but neither the paci or the bottles affected her ability to breastfeed.  She is now almost exclusively breastfed but we still giver her a bottle for her last feed of the night.

  • We tried the Playrex Binky days 2-4 and finally on day five I took out the wubbanub with the soothie on it and that finally did the trick. Thank goodness. Went out the next day and got her the plain of soothie too. Love it. And no nipple confusion. Waited until week 2 to do a bottle but she goes between both fiarly well.

  • I was waiting to avoid nipple confusion. I gave LO a regular binky out of desperation once last week and it was rejected. I got a pack of soothies yesterday and she was in love at first suck. And my nipples feel AMAZING after not being sucked on everytime she gets a little fussy. It's only been a day and a half, but she has no problem going from the breast to the binky and back.

  • My son had his paci at 2 1/2 days old. No nipple confusion here. I am EBFing and he does fine he spits it out when he wants me.

  • LO had a paci as soon as they brought him to me in the hospital after his bath, etc.  He had no nipple confusion since day 1.

  • I EBF and gave a pacifier at 1 week at the LC's direction because LO was just using me and destroying my nipples in the process. We've never had an issue because of it, other than that LO loves it.
