Pregnant after 35

Prenatal Vitamins

So before I got pg with DD I started taking the prenatal and DHA 3 months before TTC and was religious about taking them throughout the pregnancy.  Since this pregnancy sort of snuck up on us, I hadn't been taking any vitamins at all!  I started today but I'm a little worried....how important are they and do you still get the benefit if you start once you're actually pg?

Re: Prenatal Vitamins

  • It's best if you've been taking them for a while, so your body can stockpile a bit, and keep up with the folic acid.  Taking them from now on is still good, though!  You still get benefits if you take them every day, just not as strongly as you would if you'd been doing it ahead of time.

I wasn't taking any kind of vitamins before we found out we were pregnant. So far everything seems to be fine. In fact, during the 1st tri I was so sick for a week or two that the dr. said I could skip them for a few days.
  • I only started taking prenatals when I found out I was pregnant about 8 weeks in.

The DHA is not necessary until third trimester, and then only if you don't get natural sources of Omega-3 normally (which I don't as a post gastric bypass patient).

I take a special prescription prenatal that's chewable to assist with absorption issues I have due to my bypass.

I still find I have to supplement my magnesium, potassium, Iron and B-12 because of the drain on my system.
