Sudafed while BFing?

Anyone have experience?

I have enough of a freezer stash that I can pump & dump all day if I decide to take it, just wondering if its going to negatively impact my supply.

I'm so congested, my ears and head ache. All weekend I used the netti pot, put my head over boiling water, etc.

Re: Sudafed while BFing?

  • I don't know about sutafed, but i took one dose of a childs decongestant and it screwed my supply. It took a week of pumping after every feeding to get it back.

sudafed works by drying up your sinuses, etc.  So yep, it dries everything else up too.  benedryl is "safe" for bf'ing, but also works the same way...

    Sorry!

  • I have steered clear of sudafed while nursing.  I've taken benadryl for extreme itching or sneezing and it's been okay.

If you're REALLY congested try a positive-pressure sinus rinse... although you need to be careful with those because they can blow your ears out. (I have had this sinus thing for three months and that, or my neti pot, are keeping me sane.)

    how do I do that?

The last few times the neti pot isn't helping bc I'm so congested it just gets stuck in the side I am pouring into. Maybe I should neti pot just after the steam or after my shower.

And I can feel the congestion in my ears too.

  • I'm right there with you.  I've been using the neti pot after showers and that seems to help more.  Gavin's been stuffed up too, so we've been making the bathroom a steamroom once a day.  After that, I use the neti pot on myself and the nosefrida on him.  We are quite the pair.

    Poor Ellie.  :(

It is definitely going around.  Austin has it too.  We are lucky to not have the stomach virus though.  Gavin is finally feeling a bit better this morning, after being sick since last Tuesday.  Of course, we all had to get sick my 1st week back to work.

I was going to suggest this as well as a humidifier, which I'm sure you're already using.

In the section where you buy the netpots and solutions, they have sinus rinse bottles -- I know that NeilMed has one, and Walgreens has a cheaper knock-off. They look sort of like squirt bottles. You use them to push the fluid through the sinus cavity instead of relying on gravity. Be careful, like I said, because if you push too hard against a clog you'll end up getting it in your ear which makes it hard to hear until it clears :D They are much faster when you're really clogged up, though.

I used this when I had my sinus infection last month and it helped a lot. And I feel your pain with the illness train-I had three colds in a row, then the sinus infection and then the stomach flu. It's been a doozy for us, too!

  • L, hugs to you!  I hope you (and J and E) feel better asap!

I use the NeilMed Sinus Rinse bottles 2x a day every day all year round (due to  previous sinus infections/allergies).  They are, hands down, the best thing out there IMO. This is what the starter kit box looks like:  It has the bottle and 50 saline packets in it.

Walgreens, CVS, RiteAid, Costco, etc carry them.   The kit costs about $11.
