The lady doing my maternity photos would like to try out photographing the labour and delivery. Sounds gross I know but after looking up some examples online, it has more of a photo journalistic feel without showing anything to graphic. Thoughts please....I checked one site
www.thebirthphotographer.com on some examples as I know she would do pics in a slide show to music

from those examples, I think they are very nice. I'm not sure if I would be in the mood to have my pic taken when I am in labor, but the shots are cool.
Maybe tell her in advance when you want her there. I would say it would be nice to have some pics before the labor gets really bad, & right as the LO comes out and they put him on you. Go over which shots you would like to have & let her know that she would be outside of the room for everything else.
I know when I had DS I was screaming at everyone to take pictures because they were all kind of in a daze. It would be nice to have someone there specifically for that.

I might be open to early labor and right after birth photography, but personally, not during the serious/hard part.
I have seen some really beautiful birth photography though! If you think you'd be comfortable with someone in there and it's not going to cause a family rift then I'd go for it.
Birth photography can be very moving and emotional (and tasteful). I've never seen ANY birth pictures that show something that you wouldn't want shown to your father, so for the nay-sayers, that's not really a problem. They usually stay completely out of the way and people say that they don't really remember that they're there.
That being said - this sounds like her first time, so she might not know the 'lay of the land' yet and be more in your face. If you decide to do it, I'd just lay it out on the line for her - what you expect, want, don't want, etc. Ask when she's going to come to the hospital (do you call her when you're a certain cm dilated?). I'd also check with your hospital to make sure that they allow birth photography.
Unfortunately as interesting as this sounds, this isn't an option for us. Our hospital does not allow labor pictures/video due to law suits.
Yes... I was only allowed two people in the room (family or a friend) when I was pushing and no pictures of me until after they stitched me up (I had some complications right after I delivered though).
ETA: I would not have wanted anyone else in there during delivery, but that is just me. I am not a modest person, but I just would not have enjoyed it.
DH actually has video of Katherine's cord being cut, on my belly, with my belly wide open! She had only been out for about 10 seconds and had just started to cry. He didn't realize that the camera was in video mode.
I LOVE this video! I get choked up everytime I watch it. But no one else wants to see it!! It was on my computer when I was showing family a slide show and everyone cringed and turned away.
SO while I think birth photos are beautiful, even when tastefully done, they are really only special for the parents, so you need to decide if you want them.
This is what I'll be doing, but either my mom or close friend will be taking the pics

Esma: I'll turn him into a flea. A harmless little flea. Then Ill put that flea in a box. And put that box inside another box. Mail that box to myself. And when it arrives. ILL SMASH IT WITH A HAMMER. Its brilliant, brilliant, brilliant I tell you. Genius I say.
Or to save on postage. Ill poison him with this.
Some of the pictures are really cool, but if you go that route, I would definitely make sure you are on the same ground of what you want. I don't think I would be that calm and nobody will want to see pictures of my face while I'm in labor, but who knows. lol
Those pictures are actually very well done. It's not what I was expecting.
Sure, random people would not want to see them, but the pictures are for you and your children and I'm sure they would be nice to have.
With that said, I have no plans to do this!
Our doula will be taking pictures during labour and of my and DH's first few moments with LO, but I've asked her not to take any below-the-waist shots. I don't care to have a professional photographer; her digital snapshots will be totally sufficient for me!
BFP #1 9/7/10, EDD 5/14/11, Violet born 5/27/11.
BFP #2 4/9/12, EDD 12/16/12, M/C Rory 4/24/12.
BFP #3 10/6/12, EDD 6/16/12., Matilda born 6/17/13.
I'm having a birth photographer. I booked her at 8 weeks, actually! She's on my local and I love the idea of having pro photos of those moments. Plus, then my DH can be in the photos instead of having to take them (or relying on a a nurse to take pics). I did need to check with the hospital and they are fine with it, as long as we don't photograph the staff, or just ask them first.
Since I'm having a c/s, I may not get to have her in the OR. So, she'll take some before shots, and then shots of us as a new family, the baby being bathed and weighed, etc.
Several others on my board have had birth photography done and never regretted it. The photos make me tear up every time!
