Ear piercing for DD?

When do you plan on getting your DD's ear pierced? When I was a born my mom told me that the pediatrician would do it. Apparently they don't do that anymore. When I asked the pediatrician we are going to use, she said she does not do them but I can go to the mall and do them. I feel alittle weird doing that for sanitation reasons but I don't know what other option I would have. I am hispanic and in the hispanic culture it's a pretty big deal to get a girl's ear pierced asap. Plus I would rather get it done on her when she is a NB than deal with it when she is a toddler.

So are you getting her ears pierced as a NB? If so where?

  • I wanted to do it as soon as possible, but I was hoping my pedi would do it. I haven't asked him, but I know that some of them still do this. If he doesn't do it, I will take her any place the pedi recommends and make sure I talk to him about how to avoid infection or anything like that.

  • i am having a boy but i just wanted to say that you should do it when she is asleep and do both ears at the same time. I am hispanic to and also had my ears pierced when i was only a few weeks old. When i look back at the pics you can tell i was in agony but my friend said that the best way is to get them done at the same time and when the baby is asleep bc mine are so crocked and uneven. i thought when my friend suggested that (she used to work at a childrens boutique and maternity store) it was brilliant and she said alot of parents said that it worked very well for them.

This. Plus she has to be old enough to take care of them herself. *If* i were to do it when she was little, i would spend the money to take her to a professional piercer, not at some spot in the mall.

  • my pedi doesn't do it, but there is a head and neck doctor that does it, and we'll go there. I'm thinking we'll do it around 3 months old.

Me too. I got mine pierced when I was 5 and let them grow in because I didn't like them. I have never re-pierced them and probably never will. I am going to let my daughter decide if and when she wants them.

My SIL pierced my niece's on her own when she was less than a week old with just a sterilized sewing needle. I wouldn't know where else to get them except for a jewelers at the mall.

THIS. I had mine pierced when I was around 6. It was no biggie, plus it made a nice outing with my mom that I still remember. That said, I have a lot of Italian family that pierced ears right after birth.

  • If LO was a girl, we'd wait till she asked (and I guess if our boy asks then we'll let him then too.... I think it's unattractive though... but anyway...).

That being said, check around with other pedis b/c I have a few friends who got their DD's ears done with their pedis, so they're still out there.  I've also heard that it's a good idea to do it while she's sleeping so they're even.

And I had mine done at the same time when I was 10 or so... I would make sure both could get done at the same time regardless of how old she is.  Get them both out of the way at the same time- not need for pain twice!

  • My husband and I have different opinions on this. I would like to do it when she asks and is responsible to take care of them. (I was 10 when I got mine done-I just came back from spending 4 weeks away at summer camp-and my parents figured if I was responsible enough to do that, I could get my ears pierced. I was asking for at least a year before)

My husband would rather get them pierced when she is young and has no memory of it.

We will see what will happen.

  • If its a girl, she will not have her ears pierced until she is older.  I had mine done in 5th grade, I was 10, had them done at the mall.  Then again it is the opposite for me than you, where I live, within our community, babies with ears pierced are not common.

His three plus my one; we are all excited to welcome a little one!

  • DD is 4YO and we have zero plans to get her ears pierced anytime soon. I'm Hispanic and had my ears pierced when I was about 2-3YO. But, that doesn't mean I need to perpetuate it.

  • I plan on doing the same thing that my mom did with me. I had my first set of holes done by my pedi when I was nine months old. I was allowed to get my second set done when I turned 14. My mom has two sets of holes and I wanted a second set so she took me for my second set on my birthday once I was old enough to know I really wanted them.
  • I was 5 when I got mine done. We plan on taking DD to get hers done sometime around her 4th birthday, since she has been asking for months. We will take her to our pediatrician, since they do offer that service, but if they did not I would go to a place that does Tattooing and Piercing.  They have are better equipped and better trained than some teenager making min. wage at the mall with a piercing gun.

  • This is something DH and I haven't actually even talked about yet. I'm kind of in the "wait until she wants them done" boat. I got my ears pierced when I was probably 7 or 8. I don't feel like it was so painful that it's important to do it while the baby has no memory of it. I rarely even wear earrings, so it may not be a big deal to my daughter. We'll see. But I think for us it'll be more fun to make it a fun day out when she's older and a good way to teach her some responsibility.

  • I got DD# 1 ear pieced at 8 months, and DD # 2 at 6months. The pediatrician recommended that we waited until they had all there hep shots. We just went to piercing pagoda in the mall, but it is also where the pediatrician recommended and they has a good reputation.

I recommend that you also get both ears pierced at the same time, it makes things so much easier.

    Me too.

Mine were done when I was 6 weeks old, at the pedi's office. I had noting but trouble with them from ages about 2-6. I messed with them constantly and they were ALWAYS scabby and infected.

  • This has been the ONLY issue my husband and I have had since we found out we are having a girl.

My sisters and I have had our ears pierced since we were one.  None of us remember having it done, none of our ears ever got infected. I keep the same earrings in, another sister never wears earrings, and the middle sister got more ear pierceings!

I would like to have our girl's ears pierced while she is no older than one year. My husband thinks it should be her choice.

My friends have been telling me to get her ears pierced behind his back. What can he do once they've been done? I couldn't do that though.

We are still talking about it.

  • I am getting DD's ears peirced as soon as I can. I too am also hispanic. I had mine done when I was 3 weeks old and my pedi did them. DD all ready has a set of little pearl earrings (My grandmother used to love to wear pearls. Her middle name is my grandmother's real name.) But as soon as I get a thumbs up from her pedi DD will get her ears peirced.

  • I am not having a girl, but I personally think it should be the little girl's decision when she gets older if she wants them or not.

I plan on having unnecessary holes put in my daughters body when she asks me to put the holes in her body.

I agree that a tattoo and piercing ship is the safest place to do it. They're trained to be sterile and are professionals (not a teenager at a mall) and they use a needle instead of a gun which is better. The needle removes the piece of skin - the gun may not and leave a keloid (bump of skin) behind.

  • I personally think earrings look tacky on a baby, but then again, that's not part of my culture and so I perceive it differently. My mom waited until I asked to have them done, I was four and we got them done at the mall. I was so excited and it is a very fond memory I still think about, it was the first time that I felt like a big girl!

  • I had mine done as a baby and plan to do the same for DD.  Thankfully, my pediatrician does ear piercings, I wouldn't feel comftorable going to the mall or a tattoo shop.

  • Thank you for your opinions girls. My pediatrician did say that we should wait until DD has her Hep shots before we did the piercings so we will wait till after that for sure. I think it's a good idea to go to a head and shoulder doctor or maybe a tattoo shop (although the idea of a big tattooed and pierced man piercing my little girl's ears is really funny to me). I don't know if I want to go through the trouble of finding another pediatrician just for this purpose, especially since I like her. I have some time to think about it so we'll see.

  • This may seem silly...but 12!  I feel like if she wants them, then she can have them done at 12.  I feel like she would be old enough to take care of them then.  Of course, this is when I was allowed to do it. ; )

I also had to wait until I was almost 12.  My older sister had to wait until she was 16, so I lucked out! I would prefer to wait until then, but I am going to play it by ear (haha).  I also don't want her to be the only girl in school without her ears pierced, if it's what she really wants and she seems mature enough to care for them.
