Extinction Method

Has anyone else used the extinction method from Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child?  Maddie normally sleeps really well at night, but her naps are a disaster.  She was generally only sleeping about 20-30 minutes 2-3 times per day.  We started with the extinction method yesterday and she cried - for the whole hour before we were supposed to go soothe her again.  Then she ended up falling asleep on DH for about an hour and a half.  I'm trying again today and she has been crying for 26 minutes.  When does it get better????

Also, please no flames for our decision to let her cry.  We discussed it and this is the option that works best for our family.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Extinction Method

  • I am not familiar with this but HUGS!!!  It's tough.

We let our LO CIO too, and it worked well for us.  Only took a few days and she sleeps really well now.  She takes 2 naps a day for 2 hours (sometimes 30 minutes more or less depending) and she goes to bed on her own sometime between 9-10 and wakes once around 2am for a small bottle (since she is so tiny  weightwise I haven't tried to break her of this yet).

CIO works for some and not for others but we felt it was best for us and her.  SHe did really well with it and only took about a week.

Best of luck!  Lots of positive sleepytime vibes coming your way!

  • We did CIO with DS too and like the pp said, it really only takes a few days to get MUCH better!  It was torture at first, but it was soooo worth it for us.  Hang in there.  It will get better.

  • Thanks ladies!  She ended up falling asleep at the 34 minute mark, which is CONSIDERABLY better than the 60 minutes she cried yesterday.  It was a *little* easier yesterday because at least DH was here to suffer through the crying with me.  I'm ok with letting her cry a little because I know, intellectually, that in the long run it is going to be well worth it and the best thing for her.  But after about 10 minutes or so, I just feel like the worst mom in the world.

  • Serena has a couple of minutes of crying at night even after she goes to sleep, if I keep going back it goes on forever but if I give her her few minutes she is settled and asleep in no time.  And literally those 2 minutes can feel like an eternity when you are both tired.

  • I am also unfamiliar with this method.  I promise I am not flaming but are you sure it says to let her go for a *full hour* without any type of soothing, especially as young as 4 months? I am just unaware of any kind of effective sleep training before 6 months.

We followed the Ferber method at 6 months and I liked that it allowed us to go in at time intervals that we were comfortable with to check and console. Even letting our son cry for a few minutes at a time was really hard, but yes, it got better within a week.  Good luck.

  • At 4 months, DD loved to nap in her swing. She would sleep great in there.
