Please help with diaper rash...

This is the first real diaper rash that LO has had thanks to some stupid store-brand diapers claiming to be organic...sigh....

We've been slathering on the Desitin and giving her tons of naked time for the past 2 days and while the redness has subsided a bit, her skin looks all dry and chapped.  Now, I get that dry is good for diaper rash, but this is too dry.  What do I do? It seems like if I moisturize, it's only going to make the rash worse.  But I don't want her getting so dry she cracks and bleeds.  Help!!

Re: Please help with diaper rash...

  • Butt Paste is a wonder paste. Our ped recommends it and it's been great. At the HINT of redness I slather it on and within 1/2 a day her butt is back to normal.

Bordeaux's Butt Paste and Desitin have both worked for us. We've seen improvement in hours with both of these.

  • CJ's BUTTer works well for us as a barrier. When her rashes are really bad, we use Boudreax's Butt Paste. Vaseline is also a good barrier.

  • I CD part time, and we've never had rashes issues. maybe you should give some g diapers a try.

  • Try Butt Paste.  I use it for everything.

  • My favorite cream is Desitin.  I've used Butt Paste, and in my experience it comes off too easily in the diaper.  It just doesn't "stick" to the skin like Desitin does.

My pedi recs Dr. Smith's diaper rash cream after we had a rough go with diaper rash a month ago.  It's usually stored behind the pharmacy counter.  I was able to get it at Walgreens pretty easily.  It's also super thick and stays on well.

Do you see little red bumps at all?  If so, that's a fungal/yeast rash that's developed and you'll need a script from your pedi for ointment to fully get rid of it.  Been there, done that too.

We CD part time as well.  We tried these 'organic' sposies for a nap and after using only one she broke out.  I've been using Huggies with the Desitin since it isn't CD safe.

Will Butt Paste help moisturize? I'm afraid I'm trading one problem in for a new one.

  • If you think it's bad enough take LO to the pedi. They can give a Rx for some really good cream that helps really fast. Sounds like you have done all you can do.

Hmm, there were little red dots in the beginning - not raised bumps though...

Looks like we might be heading back to the pedi.  We've been in and out already the last few weeks with heat rash and eczema.  I'm so sad for my little girl and all her rashes. :(

  • My baby had fungal diaper rash a few times and lotrimin 9as rec my pedi) worked great.  You have to use it for 5-7 days straight.

No need to be raised.  Just red dots - looks different than a rashy spotchy thing.  Almost like little pin pricks of red.

  • DD has rash issues. The only thing that works for us is Aquaphor. I swear that stuff could cure cancer! Any time I see some redness, I put on some Aquaphor and bam it's gone within a day or two.

When she was 1 week old, she got the nastiest diaper rash. It was so sad. It was blistered and chapped and red. We tried Butt Paste and Destitin and niether worked. After a week of that, someone mentioned Aquaphor. We just so happened to have some because that's what we use to heal our tattoos, so I put some on her, and I noticed a huge difference over night!

  • FWIW, my pedi said to stay away from Desitin as it is too drying.  He recommended Vaseline when we were battling a nasty diaper rash.  That's what I use now at any sign of redness.

     Good luck!

Yes  I completely agree, Aquaphor is amazing!   It's what they used on the babies in the NICU my DS was in and it's all we use on him since we brought him home.  We tried Desitin and it seemed to make it worse.  Aquaphor clears any hint of diaper rash up very quickly.

  • Maximum Strength Desitin. It's the only thing that's worked for us, and we have tried A LOT.

  • I noticed yesterday DD had tiny pimples all over the area, and the area is pink (vs. each individual pimple being pink).  Does this sound like a fungal rash?  I did buy some fungal cream awhile back that the pharmacist said doubles as diaper rash cream (I think lotramin).  Wondering if I should be using that instead of Butt Paste.

Anyone know if Aquaphor will work on fungal diaper rashs?
