Hives...????

Hi. I don't usually post on here but do a lot of lurking and you all seem to have an answer for everything..So I thought I would ask you all your opinion because I am not seeming to get a direct answer from pedi. On Saturday before bed DS developed what looked like a hive on his face and back of his head. It was a huge red blotch and at first I thought something had bitten him since there seemed to be a white center. But it started to fade and eventually went away. I called the pedi and she said it was either a bite or a reaction to food. She thought since it was disappearing and reoccuring in another area, most likely it was a food allergy.Plus I tore his room/crib apart looking for the culprit bug and found nothing. She said he could keep "reacting" in this way for 5 days and to give him Benedryl. I dont think we fed him anything he hasnt eaten before but now DH and I are afraid to feed him anything that he had that day...We were starting to try more table food and were looking forward to giving him some "big boy" food. He had the same type of red blotch yesterday and this morning but in different spots. He didnt eat anything except what he has had many, many times before. The hives seem to appear after nap or waking up.We also havent changed laundry soaps or bath soap either.

Has anyone ever had this issue? Any remedies or causes? Should we go for allergy testing? They dont seem to bother DS and is breathing is normal. I have no idea what caused this and why if its food could it still be in his system for 5 plus days! Any help or advice would be much appreciated...TIA!!

Re: Hives...????

  • Yes, my little girl frequently gets big red splotches on her face.  They very rarely have a "head" or "center", so I'm not sure that they are hives.  Usually they come and go very quickly (sometimes within minutes) and they vary in location...her face, on her forehead, and in her eyebrow.  The pediatrician is not very concerned although I bring it up at every appointment.  She feels that since the spots come and go and never linger, that it's probably just sensitive skin.  She has no other allergy symptoms.

I have never treated the splotches with benadryl or anything else because they do not bother my baby.  If it gets worse, then I will consider taking her to an allergist.

ETA:  I am curious to see if anyone else has this problem.  It's frustrating that I don't know what's causing these splotches.

  • Hives will generally appear all over the body, are raised, but no "head".  They are very itchy - an infant they will generally respond to this by being irritable or have a hard time sleeping.  This is how my son responded.  Hives will not go away on their own, at least not quickly!  With my son it took 5 days of Benadryl for them to go away, and even then he still had a few spots on his face for another day or two.  What it sounds like your child is having is sensitive skin and/or insect bites.  My bet would be insect bites.  Now...I'm not a doctor (but I am a nurse), I would say if you want a second opinion because you are not sure you feel comfortable with your pediatrician's answer - GET ONE!!!  The best thing you can do is advocate for your children and ask all the questions you can think of.
  • a virus can also cause hives. Has DC been sick recently or getting over something? It wouldn't hurt to keep a food journal for a few days or write down what is going on when you notice a hive. Allergies are very hard to diagnose and I wouldn't automatically assume it is a food or any other allergy if nothing is changed in diet or environment. Good luck

I never thought of a virus.  Thanks.  I'm going to bring this up again with the doctor.

  • My son has broken out in hives twice.  The first time, he had no other symptoms and we never did figure out what caused them (now that we have discovered his allergy I'm assuming it was something that had egg and I didn't realize it).  The second time was right after I gave him scrambled eggs for the first time - he had a serious allergic reaction which started by him breaking out in hives all around his face.

Not saying that to scare you, but be mindful when giving him any new foods (especially if it is one of the 8 common allergens), it's possible he could have some type of allergy.
