Brandon Regional?

I'm planning on delivering at Brandon Regional, but I've heard a few not-so-good things about them. Does anyone have their two cents to share about BR? It's the closest hospital to my home and I can't imagine driving up to TGH or USF at my first sign of labor. Any thoughts??

Re: Brandon Regional?

  • I'm planning to deliver at Brandon Regional also. It is the closest to my house and my mom works as a RN there. I've heard great things about the new Baby suites and horrible things about the ER. The Nurse or MA who took my blood in the ER a couple years ago was absolutely horrible.

The only "bad" thing I've heard from people about the Baby Suites is that they only allow so many people in the room while other hospitals allow more. I'm not sure if they're talking about during delivery or before/after. HTH!

  • i am also delivering at BRH. i have been there already to have a few special  US done and i found the doctor very nice. I have heard bad things about the hospital but not about anything having to do with the baby suites and such.
  • What prompted me to ask about BRH is that one person said they're VERY quick to do a C-Section if vaginal birth is showing any signs of struggle.A total of 3 or 4 people have had bad things to say, and I realize people will only talk when they have bad experiences, but I just wanted to make sure I wasn't making a mistake by going there. Thanks ladies :-)
  • I've had three babies there the only issue i've ever had is with some of the nurses, which could be anywhere. I've had two c sections and my doctor had me wait as long as possible before doing them (preeclampsia so I ended up being an emergency c section). The Baby and mommy suites after delivery are really nice since they've been redone and the L&D ward is nice. They are very strict about the two people per time visiting.
  • That is where I will be delivering too so I'm glad to see this post!
  • i delivered my dd there in 2008. i thought the people were great. i know the nic unit is the best and i don't actually know of one local hospital around that someone hasn't complained about. take a tour and feel it out.

  • I delivered there last year best experience except for the breastfeeding consultant. She was not helpful at all. Other than that best Nurses. I was a first time mom and were so helpful with me. One RN in particular saw that I was struggling with my lil one with breastfeeding and I didn't even have breakfast that day because I had been alone w/out fam help all day. She stayed in the room with me and the baby and demanded that I eat.

  • I think it all depends on your doctor my doctor did not push for a C section at all. I was in labor for 12 hrs. My friend went to UCH near USF and she was not allowed to dilate completely and was recommended to have C section her doctor decided this with her being just 5 hrs in the hospital.

  •  Brandon Regional is a horrible hospital, plain and simple. I went there last year because I broke out all over my body, they told me I had scabies. I was really confused because my cat never went outside considering I lived in an apartment complex with my boyfriend and the doctor walked in didn't even look at me or ask me questions and just told the nurse I had scabies cause I said I had a cat! I decided to go to a different doctor and it turned out I just had a reaction to a new lotion I was using. If I was still living in Brandon I would have my baby at TGH that hospital is wonderful. Its clean, the doctors and nursers are so nice and understanding and they will take the time to figure out whats wrong with you. I went there because I had some abnormal bleeding once, I decided I didnt want to go to the brandon hospital, they took the time to talk to me and they did alot of test which really helped because I found out I had uterus didelphys.
  • Sorry that you had a bad experience there Anomaly! I actually went there once for an allergic reactions, and had no problems. I was in and out within a couple of hours. Thanks everyone for your input, I'm happy that I at least know about the visitor maximums.
  • I have a friend who had a bad experience at Brandon. She had past problems with kidney stones following her pregnancy over a year ago, and one day she got another without warning. I went with her to the ER and the nurses were extremely rude. She was in her own room and they took their happy time even coming in to address the problem, so while she was crying/sometimes screaming in pain, the nurses came in and told her that she needed to stop making noise. Stop CRYING from pain while in the ER.... I wanted to punch the nurse in the face.

They also did a horrible job helping her with the kidney stone. They did some sort of test and told her to go home with pain meds and just pass it naturally. Well, a day or two later she's back in the hospital and they find out that its so big that she needs surgery. The poor girl sat around for days because the ER dr was too inept to see this to begin with.

That being said, Brandon is close to my house and I haven't heard anything bad other than their ER. I am also self-pay so I need to go there and find out more about their discounted rates. Does anyone know anything about their semi-private rooms and if they are nice? The discount only applies to semi-private apparently.

  • i am planning on delivering at Brandon as well, i have had several friends and family members deliver at BRH and for the most part their experiences have been great, the only thing was rude nurses but i have been to every hospital in hillsborough county and somehow have always had a bad nurse at some point. ER is ridiculous i have been there several times for various things but as far as c-sec thing that would def. depend on ur Dr. im actually closer to TGH but i refuse to go there simply becuz of the 3 students that accompany the Dr.s every time they check u.
