In a friggin' MONTH. I have no idea what to do at this point. We just got back from Charlie's 6 month check up and he gained 2.5 ounces and 1/4". His eating hasn't changed and if anything, he's getting more calories since we've started giving him some solids on top of nursing. Again, his pedi isn't super concerned because he's meeting and even exceeding milestones for his age. Yes, he was ill for a while there, but the last time he was weighed was as he was getting better. I don't want to be "that Mom," but I have a 12lb. 6.5oz six month old and it concerns me a little bit.
Charlie will be going in for monthly weigh checks between now and his 9 month appointment. Please convince me not to drop money on a baby scale and become neurotic about this.
In happier news, I'll have his 6 month pics to AW later on when I get them uploaded!
Re: He gained 2.5 ounces.
I can't convince you not to become neurotic, because I probably would too. But if the pedi isn't worried and like you said, he is meeting developmental milestones, you can take some comfort in that. Also, isn't he only 4.5 months gestationally? With that, he's pretty close to the size of other LOs that age. I think being sick probably took a toll on him too. Try not to worry too much! He is still super adorable!
I'm sorry this is probably a stupid question, but I'm exhausted from no sleep last night and I have had a baby SCREAMING in my ear for the last hour and a half...
2.5oz isn't enough weight gain? OK now that I've typed it I see how stupid it is; that's no where near a pound.
Did you tell your pedi that you were concerned about it? Did he give you any suggestions??

I know it's easier said than done, but try not to worry too much. He's happy, healthy & meeting milestones. And by his gestational age, he's on target.
If he showed signs of anything negative, I'd say go ahead and worry. Right now he is great & he will be checked monthly, so he is being watched. Just enjoy your happy lil peanut!
If it makes you feel any better, M will be that size probably. She's 11lbs12oz last week at just over 4.5 months. She gained 7oz in a week, but averages 3oz a week, so I think 12-13lbs is a totally realistic weight for us in 6 weeks. C started MUCH smaller (M was 8lbs5oz) so it sounds like he's still gaining well, despite a slow month.
As a mom who has been thru this for 2 months (and pedis who ARE concerned), it's the milestones that we need to focus on, and C seems to be really thriving, so try not to worry! (But feel free to be that mom = we all are at some point!) :-) *hugs*
I'm sorry hon, I know it's not a lot of weight but it is some weight. Don't stress too much about buying a scale. If it will make you feel better, buy it, if it will make you neurotic, don't get it.
I just looked on A's hospital charts and they have a chart that shows weight for age for preemies and Charlie is in the 25% for babies in his adjusted age category. It's one of the WHO charts, not sure if it's in with the ones I sent you before but just thought I would let you know that he's totally on the growth curve and since he's happy and healthy and developing otherwise on schedule, try not to worry (I know, I know) you're doing great, he might just be smaller. What does your mommy instinct say? I think that's more important than any scale.
I also think if the scale would make you feel better, buy it. I got one for 45 dollars, which is not going to break the bank, you know? Unless you think it will make you crazier, weighing him every day or something. Then don't do it!
But I think people are right: for his adjusted age, he seems on track. Did the pedi say he was going to take that into account?
Sorry I inadvertently posted and ran. I was late for a meeting I didn't know I was supposed to go to!!
I'm trying to just keep it all in perspective since he IS just a little guy and is otherwise totally healthy. He was a preemie, but he was a relatively normal birth weight (6lbs 1oz) so I guess I expected him to be a normal size as he grew up. Thanks for talking some sense into me. One of these days I won't freak out after a doctors appointment.

You're allowed to freak out. I can totally see why you're concerned, but as PP's said if you would feel better buying the scale then go ahead and get it. And like Lulu said, go with your mommy instinct. Try not to stress momma. And get going with those pics already! lol
I belonged to a birth board like this when DD was born. There was one mom on there whose DD was TINY. She was the bittiest of all the babies on our board. Especially early on when we were posting monthly stats, the size difference was more evident. And then as they got older, we stopped comparing stats. But just for fun the other day we did and guess what? Her DD is one of the bigger of our kids now! So eventually, she caught up... it wasn't until after she was 2, but it happened.
Just food for thought.
I wouldn't blame you for being worried, I'd be really freaked out. I would probably get a scale, but if you think you'll be weighing him obsessively it's probably not a good idea. I don't wanna sound like a jackass but have you tried getting a second pediatrician's opinion? it seems like with him being so tiny and with that little gain a pediatrician would be at least a tiny bit concerned.. I dunno. I mean, I want to say if the doctor isn't worried, you shouldn't worry either.. but just being 100% honest.. I'd get a second opinion if it was me.
hopefully he'll start gaining more, faster now that he's on solids!
Do you have any local BF stores? Ours has a scale and you can do free weight checks whenever you want and they'll send them to your pedi if you want them to. That might ease your mind some. However, just like when adults are trying to lose weight, it is suggested not to weigh yourself too often or you'll just stress about the number, so maybe it would be better if you didn't weigh him more often than his monthly weight checks at the pedi???
Either way, I'm sure you are doing everything to keep the little guy healthy. In your siggy he looks like he is happy and healthy, just a little peanut.
