Arrrgh, BCBS refuse to pay for my LO's circumcision done at birth claiming that it was not a necessary procedure and that it was "cosmetic". SERIOUSLY?

This is happening a lot since the AAP decided to change it's recommendation on circumcision. Many insurances are not covering it any more and not everyone is aware, some people don't even think about circumcision being optional so don't check with their insurances.
ETA: I'm sorry that happened to you, unexpected bills suck

My OB told us ahead of time that if B had been a boy we would have had to pay OOP for circumcision since BCBS doesn't cover it. Sorry you weren't expecting to have to do that.
A lot of insurance companies stopped covering it in 2009 since the AAP doesn't recommend routine circumcision. Circumcision rates in 2009 dropped to 33%, no doubt partially as a result. I'm very curious to know what they are now.
We paid for ours out of pocket. But that is because we waited 7 days and had it done at the pedi's office. My insurance would have covered it if we did it in the hospital after he was born.

Well... it's NOT a necessary procedure, and it IS cosmetic.
Our hospital makes sure to alert everyone prior to the circumcision being done that they need to make sure their insurance covers it since it is becoming more likely that it isn't.
Ours is still covered though. We have BCBS but it is union so it is a little screwy.
Re: Circumcision and BCBS
I had heard that they were going to stop paying for it. Luckily they still paid for ours.

This is the trend.
And yes, it is a voluntary cosmetic surgery.

You didn't check beforehand?
