Breastfeeding

Only nursing for 5-10 mins, WHY?

I am used to C wanting to nurse for at least a half an hour.  Lately though he has only been nursing for 5-10 minutes and is perfectly fine until he nurses again 2 hours later.  There are still the times that he nurses for 20-30 minutes, but it seems like the shorter sessions are becoming more frequent.  I know he should be getting more efficient soon, but a full feeding in 5 minutes?  I find that hard to believe.  What's going on?!

  • They really can get that efficient! A breast can be drained in like 7 min I think. My LO rarely nurses more than 10 min. Except bedtime. It's been that way for about 2+ mo now!

  • My little lady has been doing the same.  Sometimes she can last 30 minutes, sometimes 5-10.    When I pump, I notice (depending on how full I am)  I can be emptied pretty quickly!  I wouldn't worry unless your baby is appearing hungry or not pooping/peeing frequently.

  • DS bf's for 5-7 minutes and is gaining, therefore doc says he is getting what he needs!
  • DS has never nursed for more than 10 minutes (more like 5-7). Ever. He's always gained and was satisfied so I just figured that he's efficient. Also, I know that I have a really fast letdown. It is possible!
