rec your freezer tray for baby food?

E is turning 6 mo old next week so we are going to start giving her solids. we plan to make our own baby food. i just ordered these containers from One Step Ahead which I think will good for sending food to daycare. Not sure if this is enough or if I should still get the freezer trays? which one do you recommend (preferably bpa free)?

thanks!

Re: rec your freezer tray for baby food?

  • I just used ice cube trays - once the food was frozen, I popped the cubes out into gallon size Ziploc freezer bags and stored them that way (I think most people just keep them in the trays but I made a LOT of food at a time lol so the bags were easier to store).

  • They're a little expensive, but the Beaba trays are awesome!  I like that they are silicone, so the food nuggets just pop right out.  Then I store them in ziploc bags.

Ditto. I just had 2 trays and that was enough. The silicone trays are really flexible and you can run the bottoms under warm water for a couple seconds to make them pop out even easier. I had a couple Kid Co regular-plastic freezer trays (1 oz. sized) and they were much harder to twist to get the food out, and I preferred the larger sizes of each Beaba pod (2 oz).

I did the exact same thing. I'm not sure why you would need special trays... ice cube portions were great for us. We labeled the freezer bags with the item and date it was made.

  • Like the pp we used these. I would also pop them out once they had froze and used ziplock bags to store.

Yeah, I'm a bit surprised at how many people bought special trays (there's nothing wrong with it, I personally just didn't see the need to spend $$ on special ones when I could get a pack of ice cube trays for $3). Oh, and we labeled the bags as well - we used everything well before it's best before date, but marking the item was essential since when you have 3 different orange veggies it can get hard to tell them apart! For us, it was a gift. I wouldn't have spent the money on it at the time, but now that I now how nice they were to use, I recommend them to others. Personally, I found the harder plastic ones (like freezer trays) more difficult in comparison, especially if I was trying to prep something with a baby in my arms.

I've had a similar change of opinion about a video baby monitor. Totally thought it was an unnecessary splurge for our small house until I now realize I do way too much peeking and would have done better helping A to STTN if I'd had that convenience --- definitely investing in that next time. I think moms deserve a few convenient splurges every now and then!

The only reason why I bought special trays is because (1) I wasn't sure if our cheap old ice cube trays were BPA-free and (2) I wanted trays with lids to make them stackable (we don't have that much freezer space) and to keep the babyfood clean.

I actually got the OXO ones (like ice cube trays but with lids, all BPA-free) for only ~$4 and then the Annabel Karmel ones (silicone one with lid) I got for $9.99 but now it's ~$7. Both are pretty easy to pop the food out, but honestly, I prefer the cheaper OXO ones because it was half the price and was still the easiest to get the food out (just like getting ice cubes out of an ice cube tray). I only have those 2 trays and then like others, I store them in Ziploc bags once frozen.

Oh totally! I'm not judging at all, I was just surprised at how many people had the special trays - I guess I didn't realize how commonly they were used. Smile

    This exactly!

I think I deserve more splurges than I take :) I totally splurged on our double stroller and I LOVE it! Totally worth it!

  • Thanks for all your recs! We do not have any freezer trays so I need to get one. Thanks for the tip about transferring to ziploc bags! I like the OXO and Beaba ones. I am particular about getting BPA free stuff so I do not mind paying a bit extra for that.
