Will and Dash have been devouring their cribs lately, so I've been looking everywhere for teething rails. Couldn't find them in stores, couldn't find them online - it was all very WTF?
Finally I googled to try to find out where to buy them, and that's when I discovered that they're not commonly sold here - unless provided with the crib by the manufacturer, which is rare - because they're regarded as unsafe. Are you serious? It's a 3 FOOT LONG PIECE OF PLASTIC. (Or padded fabric. Whatever.) How the hell is that unsafe?! It's not like it's a choking hazard or they can strangle themselves with it.
I can only find two sets: these, which are $45+ per piece, meaning I'm looking at about $200 to outfit both cribs, and these from Ikea, which are only about $7 each but would require a day long trip to Sydney to purchase (I can't get them shipped unless I meet a $100 minimum order). Or I could buy some from the States, but of course then I have to deal with crazy ass international shipping rates.
AAAAAAAAAAAGH!
Re: minor vent: teething rails
I wouldn't mind shipping you some if you found some that you liked. Our selection in Hawaii is very limited as well but if you wanted to order them off Amazon, shipping is usually free to Hawaii. I could them ship them to you? Would it be cheaper that way?
You could DIY one out of fleece...cheap and effective. And washable!

I like this one since you make tabs to tie it on...easy peasy!

Aw thanks! You are so sweet.
Unfortunately the international shipping would still be a biatch...downside of living on the backside of the world, I guess.
You know, I've thought about this but my dudes like to tear at fabric with their teeth (like bite it and jerk sharply away - a lot like a puppy, actually!) and I don't think fabric would hold up. I think it's plastic or nothing.
fleece is cheap.....maybe do a test run with some fabric wrapped around the crib rail and fasted with some sort of tie or safety pins underneath? or you could just go w/one of the DIY methods Lori posted but for just one rail and give it a try.... if it works you can make 3 more and if it doesn't then you haven't really lost out on much?

True! I might go to the fabric store this weekend and see what I can find. And now that I'm thinking about it, I wonder if they would stop chewing once it's covered in fabric? I mean that they clearly like the feel of the wood, and if that's not accessible, maybe they'd just stop altogether (vs destroying fabric covers). Hmmm...
So after my last post, I found and bought a fleece one (this one for the front and this set of two for the sides) and FYI, it's actually plastic/vinyl-ish on one side because that's how it's waterproof so the drool doesn't end up getting trapped between the rail cover and the rail and rotting the wood. So I think you can probably tie it so that the plastic is facing up instead of down against the railing. Unless, you think the boys will probably rip up soft plastic too?
For me, I figured if I wanted a fleece + waterproof layer, for that length to cover 3 rails, it would cost me about $25 plus a LOT of time (that I don't have right now) to make it, so I dished out the extra $10 and bought them...
If you actually want to see the plastic/waterproof side, msg me on FB and I can take some pics for you
