Breastfeeding

BF'ing and pumping- 2 week old..working moms come in...

DS is almost 2 weeks old. I am breastfeeding but I will be returning to work when he is 8 weeks old. I would like to supply the caretaker with milk however, I am being told that if I pump now on top of breastfeeding I will make my body produce more than I need. What are those of you going back to work doing? Suggestions? Thanks!

  • For both kids I did one extra pump per day on top of EBF. I did it at like 8-9am, an hour after feeding. Yes you are telling your body to make more milk, but one extra feeding isn't THAT much. I started at 2 weeks, and had 200 oz in the freezer by the time I went back at 8 weeks.

Your supply will regulate back down once you are back to work anyways. And now I am BARELY making enough... So I'm glad I had the extra!!

  • When I was on maternity leave, I pumped the side LO didn't eat off of after her morning feed. I'd get anywhere from 1.5 to 4 ounces everyday. I started doing this at about three weeks old. I didn't have a problem keeping up with her when I was pumping at work, at least at first. I had a few times where I had to dip into my freezer stash, but I certainly didn't need a huge stash. When my supply wasn't keeping up, I added a pumping session after she went to bed and soon got back on track.

  • I'm new at this too (first time mom) so I'm not sure I'll be much help, but I started pumping daily after DS's morning feeding at about 2-3 weeks or so and I have a nice stash going.  I usually get between 3-5 ounces a day.  I'm also planning on pumping at work when I go back (in 5 more weeks) and I've heard all you really need is enough to get through one day - then whatever you pump the first day will be used the second day, and so forth... So even if you don't pump an ounce until the day before you go back, you shouldn't have a problem.
