Breastfeeding

I did not get hardly any breast feeding supplies from shower

Can you please suggest some bottles that I will need to start off with? Sizes and all. and I know you nipple butter or something like that as well. Help please? I like the tommee tippee brand a lot, but am not sure if those go with bf or formula. TIA!!

  • I didn't get any BF supplies for my shower either - I think that's pretty normal.  BF supplies are pretty personal, and it's not like you're going to open it and gush, "Oh how CUUUUUTE!".

Anyway, don't go overboard on buying any one brand of bottles - you don't know what LO will like.  Buy one or two of one brand, try it, and if it doesn't seem to be going well, try another brand.  When you find a brand LO likes, you won't need that many if you're EBF.  If you're going back to work, that's another story.  My daycare uses the same bottle for all feedings and just washes it in between uses.  Some daycares may make you send a bottle for every feeding, in which case, you'd want a bunch.  The smaller bottles will be OK for a while - I don't think LO was taking in more than 4 oz until she was 4 months old or so.

You will want some lanolin, but the hospital might give you enough samples to get you through those first couple weeks.  My hospital also gave me some gel soothie type pads, which were wonderful.  You'll probably need some nursing pads, I used the Lansinoh disposable ones and stopped needing them around 3 months old.  You might want a nursing cover, and a boppy or my breast friend, but otherwise, BFing doesn't require a bunch of gear.

    Good luck.

  • Start off with 4oz. bottles and nipples that are orthodontic and similar to the breast in case you decide to breastfeed or go back and forth from bottle to breast. You'll also need a pump if you are bottle feeding breast milk... all bottles should work for either breastmilk or formula I think.

If you are pumping or breastfeeding you'll definitely need some nipple cream. Medela makes a good one or Earth Mama Nipple Butter is a nice, natural type product.

With bottles, I would buy a couple styles and see what LO likes before you buy a bigger stash. We only feed the baby bottles during the night and have 2 of the style we like that get washed daily. So far, Nuk has been the best fit for our little girl Smile

  • whatever type of bottles you get don't use breastflow....they are not as good as they seem.  nipple collapses and they are not very easy to clean and baby seems to have a harder time with a breastflow bottle than with Avent.

My LO uses Avent or soothie bottles, soothies are really hard to find tho but they are his favorite!

you will need nursing pads too

  • We had the tommee tippee bottles and LO hated them. We use the NUK bottles with a slow flow nipple. I liked the Medela nipple cream the best because it was easier to spread.
  • thank you all for your input!

  • both kids use/used born free bottles without a problem.

do not bother with the smaller 5oz size - just get the big ones and fill it to where you need it.

for dd#1, we bought the smaller bottles at $10/bottle and got 4-5 of them. at 6 months, i stopped ep'ing and started formula and she started taking much larger quantities so we bought the larger ones and needed 6-8 of those for daycare/back up /cleaning, etc. Again, it was $10/bottle. That's a lot of $ on bottles.

we should have just bought the large ones and filled as needed, even if it was only 2-3 oz.  lesson learned.

I LOVE the breastflow bottle and so does DS!

  • I had a ton of medela 5oz bottles handed down to me so I just stuck with those.  LO has had no problems with those nipples (stick with the slowest flow for as long as possible).

For nipple cream, while Medela Tender Care is easier to spread, it stains like crazy.  I prefer the Lansinoh lanolin and just warm it between your fingers for a few seconds before trying to spread it.  It doesn't stain and you don't have to clean it off before feeding.
