Pain-leg, thigh, sciatic nerves=can NOT walk

I haven't seen anyone else post that they are having leg pains that prevent them from walking.  I've been in so much pain for over 2 weeks, I limp around and try not to put pressure on my right leg.  It hurts really bad about 4" to the right of my butt crack all the way down my leg including thigh especially, knee to ankle.  My left leg has been carrying the weight and now my left thigh is tensing up.  I told the obgyn 2 weeks ago and he said it was okay to go to the chiropractor so I did but I was too tense and nervous being "cracked" with the baby inside me that I didn't relax enough to allow the cracking to help, if anything I think it made it worse.  I walk like an 80 year old lady! Also try peeing 10x a night when you can't even get out of bed let alone walk to the bathroom!  I called the obgyn today to hopefully get a prescription for physical therapy and it's been 3 hours and he hasn't called back.Crying

  • I get the same exact thing, except that it comes and goes.  My LO is very active, and depending upon how/where he's sitting/moving, I go through periods of severe leg pain and not being able to stand or walk.

we were talking about sciatic nerve pain in yoga the other night and our instructor said to try sitting on a golf ball or a tennis ball.  put it right under the cheek that hurts.  it's supposed to spread out the nerve and alleviate some of the pain.  (although i thought she said that it can only be on the left side and yours seems to be on the right so maybe yours is not sciatica?)

she also suggested standing up (may be too much for you with your pain), bending the leg that hurts and slowly pulling it up at the knee as high as you can.

good luck.  hope you get some relief soon!

It's funny that you say that because I do that automatically every time it comes when I'm already standing...must be some sort of reflex.

  • Hello I am suffering from the same thing cept I have had this since Febuary and it's now almost May! It's been terrible. I am still working full time but have a desk job luckily. I started PT about a month after the sciatica started. All PT could do for me was to massage the knots out of my lower back.....they cannot do any ultrasonic things or TENS unit things to help while you are prego. Pretty much they suggested  a few stretches and just massage the area. It took me like 3 sessions of massage to get all the knots out that I had built up from compensating from one leg to the other as my sciatica switches legs frequently. I was going once a week for a while and dropped down to once every 2 weeks. I am not feeling any relief from the appointments anymore, as they do not take the sciatica away so I just quit going now. I use ice and heat as my PT suggested and I got a RX from OB/GYN for Tylenol with codiene for when it's really bad. It actually helps for  a little while if you are spasming and having a ton of pain. Mostly I try to stay off my feet as much as possilbe and that's hard working FT and having a 2 year old! Good luck to you and my only hope is knowing that this will all be gone once the baby is here! ( had this with my first one too!)
  • Per my doc, the only way to get rid of the pain is to have a baby :( I was able to get intermittent FML for when it gets really bad and I have to leave work.
Baby number two! Coming soon! June 8th.
  • Thanks for your comments and experiences....now I know I'm not the only one with these horrible pains!  I'll look into tylenol with codeine...IF my doc calls me back!  It's been 5 hours now and I'm still waiting!

  • I have been having back pain for the last week or so, at times so bad I can't walk. It is also my sciatic nerve. I went and had a prenatal massage (which helped), but the problem is I always wake up in the morning on my back. So my mom bought me a body pillow to put behind me (I sleep with a snoggle pregnancy pillow in the front) and last night I didn't roll over and this morning my back pain had significantly decreased. I mean, it's still there, but I think it's just going to have to heal and not sleeping on my back really really really helped me.

  • I would suggest getting a massage and having the therapist work your hips and butt area.  Then I would go straight to the chiropracter afterwards for an adjustment when you are more relaxed.

Some chiropracter offices don't do enough therapy to relax you before the adjustment thus making it harder for your body to relax and go along with the adjustment.

You could also have your dh use his elbow to apply pressure to sore spots in your hips, butt and thighs.

     Good luck!!!

  • I had this same pain really bad on my right side starting at about 18 weeks.  The pain was so bad that my doctor told me to go to the ER right away.  They checked for blood clots and did an x-ray but everything came up normal.  They agreed it was really bad sciatic nerve pain.  Really bad, considering the only way I could describe it was, "worse than the pitocin contractions I had with my son."

Luckily, my nurse offered some personal advice as we were checking out that made a huge difference.  First, I bought a maternity support belt from Motherhood Maternity (only store in our area to carry them).  Made a bit of a difference, but not total relief.  I could walk without collapsing to the ground from the pain at least because it lifted the baby up off the nerve a little bit.  Then, I booked an hour long prenatal massage and told the masseuse exactly where the pain was.  I seriously haven't had any problems since and I'm 34 weeks along now.  I think I've had 1 or 2 small twinges when the baby would change positions, but nothing bad at all.

I really don't foresee any more problems as the pain has been gone so long, but if they come back, you can be sure that I'll be back at the spa getting another massage!  Not only did it completely relax me and get rid of all the stress I had built up everywhere, but it "fixed" my sciatic pain.

Oh, and if you need more reasons to splurge with a massage:  There's also scores of information out there on how the massage is just as good for the baby as it is for you because it increases oxygen flow and relaxes the muscles surrounding the baby.  It also pumps your body full of endorphins and passes them to the baby, making you both happy and relaxed.  Just make sure that the masseuse is specially trained for prenatal massage as there are areas that they need to avoid.

  • I have been having the same pain for the last couple of days.No matter what I do it just won't stop hurting.

It quits hurting for a few minutes when I have been lying down, but as soon as I get up for a couple of minutes the pain comes back just as bad if not worse sometimes.

  • Laughing and horrified at the same time:  right now, I'm perched on the chaise portion of my sofa with a heating pad on my butt having my (half-caff) AM coffee.  Tears are streaming down my face at the pain in my lower right buttock (feels close to the tailbone) and shoots down to my foot on occasion. I'm on these boards trying to figure out what this pain is and how to get rid of it by TOMORROW, which is my first day back to work after spring break.  I teach first grade and there is no way I can run around a classroom like this!

It started a few weeks ago as a mild burning sensation in the same area (no shooting pain).  Initially It would only happen in the middle of the night depending on how I was laying and then I started feeling it when I sat down.  This whole "I'm being stabbed and can't move my leg" feeling started about three days ago.

    HELP!

I have a strong feeling it's the sciatic, but could it be a blood clot?
