Switching to Formula ?

LO is 6 weeks and we are making the switch this week to formula - our pedi recommended Enfamil AR because of his reflux. For those of you that have switched to formula, what did your weaning schedule look like? How much formula would you give per each ounce of breastmilk and did you give formula at every feeding in the beginning or just one a day? LO is so sensitive to everything and I don't want to jump start his system but we are so ready to get him on formula for many reasons. TIA!

Re: Switching to Formula ?

  • We started a few weeks ago because I wasn"t producing enough.  We gave her a four ounce bottle in the evenings.  It worked ok, but she didn't have any problems with reflux...just spit up more than I thought was normal and we figured that out since.

  • Our LO has been on formula since day 1 due to my production issues so I can't help with a weaning schedule, but I just wanted to mention that I had problems with the Enfamil AR.  Our LO has spit-up issues so we thought we'd try it, but we found that he spit up just as much and with the AR it was just smellier and chunkier (gross, I know.  Sorry!).  Every LO is different and hopefully yours will do well with it, but I just wanted to give you a heads up so if it does happen you will not be surprised!

For us, we went from Similac (caused constipation) to Enfamil Newborn (no constipation but was gassy) to Enfamil Gentlease (no constipation or gassiness but still the projectile spit-up).  At around 8 weeks now we are still using the Gentlease and his spit-up is getting better and better every day.  He actually hasn't done it in three days now!  It really helped also when we switched from Playtex Drop-ins to Dr. Browns bottles.

GL with the reflux!  I know how hard it can be to deal with that!
