2nd Trimester

What is wrong with me!!?!?!?

OK so for about a month or two now my arm has been falling asleep when i sleep. Let me be more specific, it started with just my hands being completely numb when I slept. I helped that by running cool water on my hands when I got up to use the restroom. It slowly progressed to hands being numb and then pain in the wrist/hand/arm. The pain lasts all day, as does the numbness. The doctors just say its because I am prego and told me to take tylenol 3 after I went back in the 3rd time for it. Wrist braces don't help, switching sides to sleep on doesn't help, medicine doesn't help, I am at a lose as to what to do. This is seriously messing with my sleep and I am supposed to fly across the Pacific next saturday and am worried about the effects of that flight on my body with this going on. Any one have any suggestions?

  • That is strange.  Do they think it's carpal tunnel related?

  • My arms fall asleep all the time now. Just happened earlier while I was driving and its so weird. I had bad carpal tunnel in my first pregnancy and I think its happening again

  • They haven't really said... I had to ask the first doc for the wrist brace. But when i use it, it just concentrates all the numbness to areas not in the brace (fingers, thumb, etc) All they said it pinched nerves, can't do anything becuase you are prego.
  • I have never gone myself, but I'm pretty sure that chiropractors treat pregnant women. They might be able to help! Just a thought!

  • haha i actually did that. and it relieved some pressure for a few hours but then it just came back worse.
  • It could be tendentious. I have had it for years and when I first got it, it made my arms and wrists hurt really bad. I hope it starts to feel better!

  • It probably is inflamed nerves.. that's why carpal tunnel happens so often in pregnancy. Try some tylenol and maybe icing the area where the nerves causing the pain seem to be originating from and see if you can bring down the swelling.

  • Why *don't* they think it's carpal tunnel?  Because that's exactly what it sounds like to me.  My boss is 38 weeks pg and has it too... same numbness in her arm and everything.  She got a pretty heavy-duty wrist brace and has to wear it all the time for it to work, but it works.  Her doctors said it is quite common for pregnant women, something related to the swelling you get during pg'cy and nerves being inflamed as a result.

  • it sounds like carpal tunnel...ask your doc about wrist splints to wear at night, or just go to a medical supply store and ask them there.
  • My arms and legs fall asleep constantly. My doctor said it's just due to circulation. Most of the blood in your body goes to your belly because there's so much going on there. So... your limbs can lack a bit and fall asleep easily. Just gotta move around a bunch, I wake up a lot in the middle of the night with a totally dead arm.
  • Others have already stated good info for you, but I wanted to say to avoid T3s. It's strange that your doctor told you to take some considering that codeine is not safe in pregnancy.

  • This sounds a lot like my carpal tunnel.  If you can afford it go to an acupuncturist, sometimes schools will offer discounts.  It runs in my family, and the only relief we ever got was through acupuncture.

Also, sometimes improving the circulation helps, so cold water is a bad idea.  Only wash your hands with warm or hot water.

    Stretching helps too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmjM5bXyn1Q

I hope this helps.  I had to get treated for 3 months to fix mine, but it was not pregnancy related.  Good News: I hear that pregnancy related carpal tunnel gets better after birth.

I did chiropractic treatment as well, it gives mild relief.  If its covered by insurance do it, but I still swear that acupuncture was the best thing I ever did for my carpal tunnel.
