It only grosses me out when I see kids licking or sucking on the bars while the parents either don't care or just don't notice.
At our grocery store, they have hand sanitizer and paper towels right at the cart pickup area, so I have seen some moms wiping the cart handle and seat area down first before putting their kid in the cart - maybe just pretend that happened before they starting licking it!
While I agree, its nothing I would stress over. I mean Ill do my best to keep lO from sucking on the bars and even use a cover but nothing Im going to lose sleep over. IMO

Hmmm...never was a big deal to me. I'm more used to seeing people put their children right in. When I first started seeing people use those cart covers, I thought that looked strange to me. IMO, I don't think it's a big deal....And I put EVERYTHING in my mouth as a kid. I turned out alright ;-)
I was with you on this one but then I started to obsess about the germs on my cart cover and how I was thinking that a cloth cover was preventing him from any kind of exposure. So, I ended up using the wipes the store has near the cart, I clean off the bar and sides and put him in. He never licks anything and it has worked out. But really, I know what you mean because I had felt the same way. I guess I stopped using the cart cover though when he was a little older so did use it for awhile.

This. It's also key that my LO build memory cells, which he can only do if he's exposed to germs, so he will have a strong immune system in later life. While I'm not going to have him go around licking everything, I'm also not planning to be super picky about everything being overly sanitized as it'll most likely hurt his future immune system.

Squeaker born 7/30.
But... if you aren't careful about how you fold it when you take it off, then you just "contaminate" the side that the child uses with the side that touched the cart... so, are they serving any purpose? (unless you wash after each and every use....)

I am totally not a germaphobe. I always put DS in a shopping cart, and I haven't used the cover since he's about 9 months old. He has never had more than a very brief (like 1 or 2 day) cold, and that's only happened twice in his life. Never been sick in his 19 months. I think it's because I don't freak out about germs. JMO.

Well you'd hate me then. DD hasn't used her shopping cart cover since she was 7 or 8 months old. I wipe the seat and all touchable bars before I put her in but that's about it. I also don't let her chew on anything cart related either.

this. I have a very healthy daughter and its because I'm NOT a germ freak.
I only used the cover for a few months, until he got past the chewing stage and was able to sit more steadily. I'm the farthest thing from a germaphobe and strongly believe that exposure to germs is a good thing. I wipe the cart down if they're handy (our local stores always seem to be out), but if not, I don't stress. I wash his hands when we get home and don't think twice about it. Overall, DS has been a very healthy kid. A few colds here and there, that's it.
Honestly, when I see a toddler (not so much babies, but toddlers over 14 or 15 months) sitting in a cart with a cart cover, my first thought is that mom must be a germaphobe.
I used to use the cover, but only so I could hook my keys on it and he could play with them without me having to pick them up 100 times. I don't use it anymore. Too much to carry. I actually welcome the germs. They are good for him. I do use the wipes, though, but only to wipe off the bar and that's for both of us. I do get grossed out by the stuff I see people doing with their hands, but it's not the germs that bother me.
My LO is sick often, but that is from daycare. It's gonna happen. They are going to get sick and then their immune systems get stronger. I would rather he be sick now when he isn't missing something imp., like school. Also, a lot of illnesses are harder when the person is older.
I wanted one of those covers when I was pregnant with DS, but I was talked out of it by my mom and grandma. When he was a newborn, it wasn't as big of a deal, because I wore him, but eventually it got easier to just put him in the buggy. I eventually got one, because it grossed me out so much, and I am by no means a germ phobe. But, after seeing that such a high % of carts had fecal matter on them, I'll risk my child not being immune to that. If the germs they miss out on inside a grocery cart are going to make them sick, then that's something I can live with.
I'm one that NEVER has used a cover... DS's never attempted to lick or suck on any part of the cart, and I'd rather have him exposed to the germs and build up his immune system. He's turning 18mo soon and he's only had one tiny cold so far.
(I did have him in the Moby while shopping for the first 5-6 months or so until he could sit up well on his own, so I suppose that did protect him from a lot of germs while he was really little.)

So you realize that you put your food in your cart but won't put your kid in it?? All those germs are making their way into your home through the packaging of the food you are bringing in.. Unless you are wiping down every item of groceries, anything they touch and yourself right after you come home.. Ok, maybe I'll just make you more paranoid now lol. Someone could come up with a cover for the whole grocery cart? Just a suggestion..

This! Plus you have to wash the cover all the time because the germs are now on it. Much easier to just wipe the cart with the wipes. I now only shop at stores with them.
I have never and will never use a grocery cart cover. You do realize there are germs everywhere, right? And, perhaps what you don't realize is that children need to be exposed to germs in order to build up a good immune system. It's kids who live in "germ free" environments who have a greater tendency to get sick, develop allergies, etc.

wait until you have a toddler and you have to attempt to lug around a cart cover, purse, possibly other children and your screaming toddler who likes to play chase and see how easy it is. sometimes, its just easier to put them into the cart. they will put worse things in their mouths i guarantee you.
i have YET to see someone around here use a cart cover!

THIS! Most stores have those sanitizer wipes where you get your buggy anyway. It's cheaper to use those.

I usually agree with you...except on this.
