Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

First timer, D&C tuesday. Questions. (ticker warning)

I have my D&C Tuesday morning and am heartbroken. I don't really know what to expect from this. Any ladies that can share your experience would be great. Also... how do I remove my ticker? And off of the mailing list. It's just too painful to get those emails. Thanks so much.

  • I'm so sorry your going through this.  I was a first timer too. You can remove your ticker by clicking on your bump, above, going to where your avatar and sig are under your profile and deleting the typing that your ticker has.  It looks like your only one, so it should be the only typed text in the sig box.  As for the emails, I just went to the bottom of each and clicked unsubscribe and they instantly stopped coming to my email.

As for the D&C... I was heartsick and scared... I wouldn't wish this on anyone.  My anesthesiologist made sure I was out of it before they took me back for surgery.  I don't ever remember leaving my room or being in recovery.  I was given Demerol, Ativan, and Versed in my IV.  My nurse was very compassionate, I hope yours is too.  It really took the edge off a horrible situation.  Afterwards I went home and rested.  I was given Vicoden and Motrin 800 for home.  I stayed pretty medicated and the next three days were a blur.  In retrospect I don't know how much I needed the meds for pain, I just know I needed them so I wasn't thinking about what had just happened.

I stayed home from work for a week and a half total... I just needed time before I faced the real world.  I hope this helps with the information you were looking for.

  • I am so sorry for your loss and that you have to go through this. I had my D&C a month ago. I was so incredibly upset when I went to the surgery center, I couldn't stop crying and shaking. However, the nurses and all the medical staff could not have been more understanding and compassionate. My anestheslogist (sp?) put me out before the nurses started setting up for the procedure which helped me, not seeing anything and having a calm environment. The next thing I remember, I was in recovery and they brought my husband in. They gave me pain medication before I left the hospital but never needed to take anything again. I spent the rest of the day laying in bed watching movies or reading. I did have some light spotting for a few days afterwards but I never felt any physical pain. My doctor also said I could resume normal activity the next day and have sex after a week. As horrible as the stituation was, I feel like they do try hard to make it easy as possible on you.

I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

  • ***Siggy warning*** So sorry for your loss. I had to have two done within days of eachother because the doctor didn't initially remove everything. Anyway, on both occasions they gave me antibiotics and drugs to help me relax in my IV. They wheeled me into the OR room and then gave me the drugs to put me to sleep again in my IV and within seconds I was out. I woke up in the recovery room within about 45 minutes after the procedure and once I no longer felt groggy was released. I have had bleeding but it has been minimal with cramping. The second time around my pelvic area was sore, but only lasted 3-4 days. They prescribed me Tylenol with codein and Motrin for the pain but didn't feel I really needed them. I was given 4 days off for each D&C.

  • I'm so sorry that you're going through this heartbreak.  I just had my second miscarriage on 3-29-11 at 8 weeks 2 days; first miscarriage was last year in June. I had an emergency D&C for the first miscarriage; for the second miscarriage, I scheduled the procedure after I was advised that my baby had no heartbeat.   My fertility specialist actually performed the D&C herself, which made me feel reassured.  I'm not sure how it's done in the states, I'm in France, so I'll tell you about my experience. Once I checked into the clinic, I was given a mild sedative, Xanax, to help me relax and be less anxious; I was really grateful for this - although I thought I'd made peace with the situation, the Xanax helped.  Then I had to take a shower and wash my body with a betadine solution prior to the procedure.  Afterwhich they wheeled me into the operating room, they put me on a bed with stirrups like in the ob/gyn's office and covered me with warming blankets and started the iv and then I dozed off and woke up shortly afterwards with a nurse looking after me in the recovery room.  I was told that the procedure was successful without complications.  I was surprised that I was able to rest once they took me back to my room and I just chatted on the phone with my sister who gave me all the latest gossip.  Since I was going to be in the clinic from 6:30 am until 1 p.m., I told my husband to go to work and come back to collect me...he stayed with me until they took me into the operating room and came back early.  I had spotting on and off for about 10 days.  Since the first D&C was an emergency situation - this second time was completely different.  My husband and I were both quite calm, albeit devastated and we just wanted to go home and rest our spirits.  I was told by my doctor and the anesthesiologist both told me that  the procedure has a duration of about 10-15 minutes; and that my time under anesthesia was very short.  Even though this is my second time and both pregnancies stopped before 12 weeks, the pain and sadness don't go away...it's been a month and I feel like I'm on a rollercoaster of emotions.  My dear friend told me that I should allow myself to feel whatever I'm feeling whenever I'm feeling it...no judgement - since we all grieve differently.  Just give yourself time to grieve and try to find a friend to talk to who understands what you're going through because they've gone through it...others will try to be supportive but if they haven't gone through it - they can't really know what you're feeling.  Good luck to you.
