Name Opinions - don't hold back!

So, MH and I are having a horrible time trying to find a boys name we both like.  His hands down favorite name for our (potential) baby boy is Rocco. (We are team green, hence the "potential").  And this is one of the only things he has had a very strong opinion on.

Let me start by saying that there are no boys names that I am in love with.  I don't dislike Rocco and I even think it's cute.  But, I just don't know if I like it for *my* kid.  I wouldn't side-eye it on someone else's child, but I have never encountered a real-life Rocco and I don't want our son to be ridiculed or hate us when he's a grown man named Rocco.

We are not sharing names IRL, so I'm looking for some honest opinions on this before I let it onto the short list.  Our last name is very uncommon (in the US) and very Italian.  TIA!

Please share your opinions

Re: Name Opinions - don't hold back!

  • I dont love it.... I have heard names I dislike a lot more and I think it is fine, but just fine.  I agree, I dont think I have ever meet a real life Rocco, but I dont think I would side-eye it for someone else's child either.

  • Since you are asking for honest opinions, I don't like it. I just don't see it translating very well to an adult. It is cute for a child, but I'm still not a fan.

But if it's the only name you like and can agree on, then you should use it regardless of what I or anyone else says about it.

  • Rocco.....cute for a little boy.

Buuuuut....I think the only job a man could get named Rocco is repossessing cars or being a bouncer at a club.

  • At least if YH is stuck on an Italian name you have an Italian sounding NN. Rocco is NMS but I'd not side eye it. I'd side eye if you spelled it Rycco or something to be "unique".

  • Since you are asking for our honest opinion. I don't like Rocco. The first thing that came to my mind was a pit bull and as a teacher I have heard a bunch of names.
  • well rocco here where i live, is a name associated with italian, guido-like mobsters..

cute but in my opinion stereotypical

  • I think it sounds more like a nick name than a real name.  Like PPs have said though, it's cute.  It could be odd as an adult though.  Then again, by the time someone's an adult, they're used to their name, and nobody is thnks"you're parents named you what?" when you're grown unless is something totally off the wall.

  • I kind of love it, to be honest. I could totally picture Rocco in Accounting. He'd kind of have to grow up to be cool though, otherwise it'd be a total letdown. I can't steal it though, because my last name is super common and Swedish and it would just sound bizarre LOL.

This is awesome!  And sums up my exact misgivings on the name!  Thanks for everyone's opinions - you've all backed up my concerns.  Cute for a little boy on the playground, a little strange for a grown-up who wants/needs a serious name.  I just needed a little reassurance that I wasn't alone in my thoughts.

Sorry DH - Rocco is officially vetoed!

  • Honestly, it's NMS.  Maybe Rocco as a MN? It's really difficult to imagine a Rocco in the adult business world - unfortunately, people judge you a lot before they even meet you, based solely on the name.  I'm sure he could make it work, but hopefully he has a big personality to back up that big name.  On the other hand, there is a celebrity chef named Rocco - Rocco Dispirito, and he makes it work...

  • Not trying to offend you... but I really hate it.

    Sorry

  • I think it sounds very rough and tough but I think it's cute for a boy from an Italian family.
  • I wonder if you could find a more grown-up name, like Richard, and use Rocco as a nickname?

Like some PPs, I don't hate it, but I think it's a great little boy name as opposed to a grown man name (i.e. can you picture a lawyer or judge using that name on his court documents?).

I agree, and it makes me think of the weird cartoon Rocko's modern life....

  • It sounds a bit like a dog name. I am a teacher, and I think your DS would probably get teased.

  • I may be the odd one out, but my cousin and grandfather's name is Rocco, so I'm used to it. It was never an issue for either of them.

  • I love the name, but... it's also the name of a pretty famous porn star.

  • This name doesn't bother me at all, especially with an Italian sounding last name. I did think of Rocko's Modern Life, but no one your kid's age ever will. I've seen the name Rocco on various tv shows like real people, I think I saw it on Food Network some Italian chef, and I think I remember it on HGTV like a carpenter or designer or something. So there's some proof that it can work for adult men in normal and respectful careers. It definitely doesn't make me think of a stripper or a thug bouncer.

LOL. I actually worked with a Rocco in Accounting. Cool guy, and smart.

    It's NMS but I don't hate it.

  • I had a friend named Rocco and he was awesome. But he was from Queens and he was totally Italian.  Are you Italian? He was REALLY Italian.  It worked for him, he also looked Italian.  I'd say nay on it.  Good luck!

  • Well, my first thought was, hope they are Italian if they pick that name...then I got to the last paragrah.

All the Rocco's I know (and all are adults) are all Italian, so I don't find it to be a bad name or weird.

If you choose a name that fits your heritage, it will be a bit out of the norm...depending on where you live...but doesn't make it bad.  Where I live that would be totally common.
