3rd Trimester

anybody else have this issue?

DH is outside trying to instal our carseat (graco quattro tour travel system) and It looks like it isn't compatible w/ my Corolla. I'm hormonal and a bit upset because this was the only system that worked for me since I am so tall and if my car seat carrier needs to be changed then it wont latch to the stroller and blah blah blah....he said it's because it says you can't have those types of seat belts that tighten up during an accident... I have never owned a car that didn't have those! I looked at the web sites and couldnt find anything, owners manual doesnt say ***, and the cops around here don't do car seat inspections until after LO is due.... I'm going to go curl into a pathetic ball in the corner cause I am not liking today..

i was just thinking this. I guess I don't fully understand your problem, but you may need a "locking clip" for some reason some infant seats don't come with one. Hope you figure it out!

  • We found a video for installing our car seat on youtube.com so you might try looking there. Also you can call your local hospital women and children's services and they can direct you to other organizations that do free car seat inspections. ALSO firestations usually have a technician that can check for you as well as some WIC offices.  I know how frustrating this can be and I wish you luck with it!

  • I really doubt your car is the problem. I drive a 94 geo metro, and the self-locking belts are what keeps the seat base in place properly. If my car has it, I'm sure yours does. It's supposed to, and if you have them, you don't need the locking clip.

This sounds like an untechnical DH problem. If you have any friends or family with little kids, someone can probably help you get it in right.

  • I have the same system and a camry, but we haven't installed the seat yet. So I don't know, but I can't imagine that it isn't compatible AT ALL.. like PP said--maybe a locking clip would fix it.. my car has a regular lap belt in the middle back seat...maybe you could put it there for now?

  • Did you read the car manual?

ETA: I just reread your post and you mentioned the owners manual. Duh.

Any way, I have a highlander and the manual has instructions for how to install car seats using self-locking seat belts. You have to pull them all the way out until they lock and then let them retract. Or something like that. I'd be surprised if the Corolla didn't have the same thing.

  • I had a Corrolla when I had my first baby and had no problem installing an infant seat or convertible (had the convertible installed by an inspector). I had both put into the middle of the back seat and we did have to use a locking clip. I hope he gets it figured out.

  • We're having trouble figuring ours out too with the trippy seat belts in the back of our car, so we're just going to take it to the police station to have it "inspected" and let them show us what to do. Wink

  • You can install it with the locking seatbelts.  Look online for a video and it should show you.  Carseats can be tricky if you are not used to putting them in. I have  yet to find a carseat and base that do not work in a car...

  • Graco sells clips for seat belts like that. Good luck, though. I ordered mine 3 weeks ago and still haven't gotten it. I wrote to Graco two or three times trying to find out where it is and the only answer I got was that they're going to ship out another one for me (as of yesterday) and to give it up to 2 weeks to arrive. Which is great, you know, being 5 days away from my due date. Grrrr Graco!

  • are you reading instructions for installing using the LATCH system? My car doesn't have latch so if I was trying to do it that way it wouldn't work either, there is another set of instructions for installing with normal seatbelts.

  • My DH claimed at first that none of the car seats we got would work, but he was the issue not the seats. It should be really simple to install the infant base with a locking car seat belt. I have a 99 escort and we installed it with no issues with a locking seat belt, as have we in every other car we've traveled in. You have to pull the seatbelt out all the way until it locks, and then proceed with threading it through and clipping into the seat belt buckle. Most likely your hospital will have someone the check it before you leave with the baby.

  • Do you have the latch system as well as regular seat belts? Our car had it and I didn't even know it. I would call your local fire department and make an appointment, they with help you and DH install it properly. I did this and was soo happy I did, we had it installed completely wrong even though we followed the directions. Plus they will give you a certificate saying your seat is already checked so they don't need to take time to do it when you are discharged from the hospital.

I don't have a lap belt in the middle. It's just like the two sides :-(

  • I'd be VERY surprised if it didn't work with your Corolla.  That's one of the most popular cars, so I highly doubt Graco would make a car seat that wouldn't work in it.  I hope you figure it out!

  • What year is it? We have a 2003 and it uses the LATCH system. If it's an 03 or later it should use this, which is very easy. Our Chicco fit with no prob. Maybe just DH user-error :) Good luck!

And ditto pp about going to the local fire station - ours are always willing to help.

  • How old is your car?  Does your base not have the latch system?  Some carseats just don't work.  Our convertible seat we bought for my mom's car, we couldn't get it tight enough.  We sent it back and bought the same one we had in our other cars for her as well.

You say that you're tall and it's the only system that worked for you.  Did you try the Chicco?  The handle is adjustable on the stroller.

  • Look on youtube.com. There are lots of videos on how to install different infant seats.I had an 05 Corolla with my dd and had no issues installing her infant seat (chicco) in the middle. I don't think you can use the latch unless you were installing on the sides from what I remember (have a diff vechicle now). You have to pull the seat belt all the way out and thread it through the seat, then start pulling the slack so the seatbelt goes back in, while kneeling on the base (this will get you a tight fit). It takes some practice, but I installed a graco snugride in my friend's car a few weeks ago with no issues, with the locking seatbelts.

here's one. And cars made in the last 10 years or so should all have the locking seatbelts. You won't need a locking clip since it is designed for belts that don't do this.
