When measuring big, does baby come early? 2nd+ time moms...help

As a first time mom, I'm so eager to have our little guy, as I'm sure most of us are.  At my last appointment, I measured 3 weeks ahead!?!.  I've heard of this being normal as baby goes through growth spurts at certain points, etc.  My question is, have you measure ahead and did the baby come early?  How common is really?

  • I don't think it works that way.  Your doctor may be more likely to induce a little earlier (as in at or just before your due date vs at 41/42 weeks if you haven't gone into labor already) if there is a concern about size towards the end, but size doesn't necessarily mean the important things have developed at the same rate.  Lung development is the one thing that comes to mind, they typically finish developing later in the pregnancy (I believe) so the babies that come even a little bit early sometimes have problems breathing at birth.  You don't want your baby to get here early only to have him spend the first few days/weeks of his life in the NICU.

  • I'm pretty sure no.

My sister was measuring big and gave birth 2 days after her due date. Her son was 9.1 lbs. So, you'll probably just have a big baby.

  • It is normal and doesn't mean anything really. So much can affect how big you measure like position of baby, fluid level, how you are carrying, and size of baby. My daughter I was ahead the whole second half and I was induced early only because I had pree if I hadn't had pree my doctor told me I would of went over most likely. This baby I range from 1 to 4 weeks ahead at every appointment.
  • No, your due date doesn't change if your baby is measuring ahead. It just means you're more likely to have a larger baby.

  • My son measured 2 weeks ahead the whole pregnancy, and he didn't arrive until 39 weeks and 4 days.

So no...it doesn't always mean they will come early. It will just be a bigger baby, probably.

  • I measured 3 weeks ahead consistently until about 36 weeks and then stayed at that measurement till the end (induced at 41 weeks 1 day). You might find your growth slow down closer to the end.

  • I measured small my entire first pregnancy, and so did DD.  She was 2 weeks early.

So I guess you can't ever predict.

  • no.

your baby may not even be as big as estimated--a LOT of those estimates are way off--resulting in a lot of inductions due to "big babies" when the baby comes out at an average 7-8 lbs.
